Hi, I'm building a new pc later this year and currently have the 3800x on my list, I was thinking of changing it to the 3900x. all I want to know is will it reduce game performance, I can't see how it will, I can afford the extra over the 3800x, Below is a full list of specs

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C
Motherboard: MSI MEG X570 Unify
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3800X
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4
Fans 120: Noctua NF-S12A PWM
Fans 140: Noctua NF-A14 PWM x3
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 16GB 3600 MHz
GPU: EVGA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti FTW3 ULTRA GAMING
SSD: PNY XLR8 CS3030 1TB M.2
PSU: Corsair HX850i

x = quantity

the way I'm looking at it is either change the 3800x to the 3700x or upgrade to the 3900x, there's not really much point keeping the 3800x seeing as the 3700x matches it, so if I go 3700x should I spend the money elsewhere to improve performance

hi there, well it depends on many things. In some cases the 3900x is actually better because of two sets of CCX's; each his thier own cache - and double the memory write speeds of the 3700x/3800x (due to two ccx's). Generally I dont think the 3900x looses much in gaming over 3700x/3800x, and in some wins (due to the slightly higher clocks).

In the end I would say it really depends how long you are gonna stay with it; if you can afford to switch it quickly for a 3950x/Zen4 then go for the 3700x/3800x. If you plan to stay with it for a couple of years, then 4 extra cores will be worthwhile in the long term (and is very nice to have now, rather than waiting for them). Myself, I went with a 3900x - I cant see it being slow in a few years (my 5820k did me very well for 4+ years).

If you are planning on using this purely for gaming, then you may as well stick with the 3800x as the 3900x doesnt make a difference.
If you plan on using it for more than gaming, and maybe some heavily threaded workloads then definitely go for the 3900x.

Also, how much later in the year are you planning on this build? If its still a while away, it may be better off just waiting for Zen3/4000 series as they will have a pretty big boost over the current Zen2 chips.

By July the prices will probably shift so the 3900X/3950X will probably be a little cheaper. I always get the best processor I can afford at the time as I will keep it for years, today the 12 core is not maxed for games but latter it will start to benefit from the extra cores. If you upgrade often then its a bit of a wast unless you need the cores.

With next gen consoles releasing in 2020 with 8 core zen 2 cpus, 8 cores will become the absolute minimum so I would definitely go with 12 cores and above.

You are way too early to plan a build for Q3 now. Prices and products can vary a lot. Wait about untill 1month before you plan to purchase and then makes the decissions. It just doesn't make sense now.

Gaming performance is near equal in gaming, 3900X is faster in productivity for obvious reasons.

Also CES is not too far away, I would wait to see what AMD announces.
