I have £600 to spend on a board and CPU burning a hole in my pocket to replace my 2700K. usage is mostly gaming but with some photo / video editing.

I was planning on the Ryzen 2 12 core CPU assuming that pricing would be in line with the leaks ~£400 so giving me ~£200 left for the motherboard, but as that's not the case I'm now looking at the 8/16 3800x instead.

One thing that puts me off the x570 boards is the active cooling and to be honest I don't need PCIE 4.0.

So I'm now wandering if I shouldn't just spend an extra ~£50 and get a 9900K, no active cooling, I can upgrade now, and I'm thinking gaming performance on the 9900K is still going to be better than on the new AMD.

Thoughts?

I honestly don't think the active cooling is an issue, and will probably only be needed when using nvme raid.

Well.... Next gen consoles are going to be 8 core with ray tracing. I have to say at this stage I think that's a better bet.
Thanks for the reply but I guess I've not made it clear that my choice is between the 8/16 3800X or the 8/16 9900K as the 12/24 3900X is out of my price range.

Yeah I figured the same, there are leaks that the active cooling is configurable and I don't foresee me ever needing to turn it on but it is a point of failure and I'm guessing it will add to the cost of the motherboards.

Why you would consider the Intel security risk and nuclear thermal device over Zen is beyond me. As for the chipset cooling it is only getting hot with exotic Nvme raid and the fans are active so only turn on at 60c.

Good thread, I'm in the same situation except my use case is purely gaming. This thread could be useful as the main threads are full of childish fighting and non gaming perspective.

:)

I also kinda agree cuz the price of console is just so much more friendly than building a rig. Though for some people they enjoy the process of building rigs, not the actual games being played.

I use fanless PSU for every computer i run now, exactly because i don't want the extra point of failure.

Wait for the 9900ks and intels price drops...

AMD because they are faster in Cinebench and Blender, my favourite games :D

For anyone spending less than £700-£1000 on the core components (CPU/GPU/mobo/RAM) PS5 will be better. Certainly better value. Probably better performance!

PS5 will probably be priced between £500 and £550, and will have both Zen 2 + Navi + bare-metal API.

PCs continue to be price gouged out of existence.

It’s already happened the 9900k dropped few weeks back...that means ocuk is still making profit on the chips...

What price cut? all they've done is now price it to the original MSRP of $500 when it was announced, the near £600 prices were simply a result of under supply.

Intel don't do price cuts. Any reductions you see on the 9900K are specific deals with retailers, not an official price reduction.

Just wait.

doubt intel will lower their prices - not until 9900ks and then it wont be by that much, they know the intel users will still buy intel over AMD. Ive had pretty bad experiences with AMD systems in the past from dodgy chips, crap mobos and useless factory overclocked GPUs - none of which were either cheap or crap brands. Its still going to be 2080ti and 9900KS upgrades for me - 'They just work'
