I've currently got a 3700 single core/1gb DDR400/X800XL.

Just noticed OCUK selling these 3800 X2's cheap but wandering if it's worth me replacing mine. Only really using my system for FS2004.

thanks

yus mate, in fact ocuk's retail price is around the same as what they go for on MM which makes em a steal. it will make a difference across you system it's not limited to gaming. you won't get much for the 3700 possibly £10-15 incl del but makes your upgrade path easy and pretty cheap. another gb of ram wouldn't hurt as well

well as I'm not using the system for much, I wasn't really bothering, especially as the only other game I would be interested in is FSX, but it seems that needs top end machines and was thinking I would have to scrap my system for a new Intel dual core. But maybe I can get away with just replacing my ram and gfx and CPU will be sufficient? At least that way I guess I can keep my mobo.

Maybe I should grab the Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2-6400 if my board will take it

an x2 3800 is a good cpu & really its good enough to play UT3 on it even with my 7900gt gfx card so really all U need to do is replace the cpu & gfx card. If your brave enough aswell oc the cpu. This is *** cheapest upgrade U will get, btw I have 2gb ram in mine so dont know how much difference there will be.

The latest bios for your mobo should support the X2's. What mobo is it?

An X2 3800, 2GB RAM and new gfx card would be a good upgrade for you.

Epox EP-9NPA+ Ultra

Can't make up mind here. Only use PC like once a week to go online with FS2004 which it runs happily, hmmmm

yep that's what I was thinking. as much as I would like to, the £50 could go towards some new double glazing that I need lol

Oh how houses change your priorities lol

I've just ordered this CPU. Going from a Single Core 3200+. At this price I could hardly refuse.

After Christmas I'll get a new GFX card to replace the struggling 6800. However, first I need to get 2 x 500GB SATAII HDDs for a RAID0 array as I am perilously close to filling the current single 500gb.

Should keep the old computer running for a bit longer.

I've got the same spec as you, except from I have 2gig of ram, I've got my 3700 @ 2.8 and I'm thinking of an upgrade to 3800 x2.

The point of this post is 2 gig makes a difference imo, games are a LOT smoother.

Personally I'd sell what you currently have and build a cheap C2D system.

I didn't see much difference between my X2 3800 and my 3700, I did however notice a nice increase with my lowly E4300 even at stock!

For <£200 you could get X1900XT, 2gb DDR2, E4300, Gigabyte 965-DS3 second hand and see a decent increase in performance overall.

Or he could spend £35 on the CPU and £165 or more on a new GPU. Easier to install, keeps his computer going and gets him a far better graphics card.

I went from a 3700+ @ 2.8Ghz recently. My 3800 x2 runs at 2.5 fully prime stable on stock volts, will do 2.8 on 1.45v, but one core keeps crapping out under prime95/superpi. Photoshop loves the dual core :)

In the last 4/5 weeks i have (in order) changed from a Radeon X800XL 256Mb to an XFX 7900GTX 512Mb, 80Gb Maxtor Diamond Max 9 to a Samsung Spinpoint(?) 160Gb SATA II, AMD64 3800+ venice to an X2 4800+ (all skt 939) toledo, 1Gb DDr400 to 2Gb......WOW!

It is exactly as it is/should be...like a new computer!

What should I be looking at for power wise? Will probably carry on using my Coolermaster Pretorian and maybe sell my mobo/cpu/ram/gpu to mate for £200, reasonable?

Wandering what I could be looking at on MM
