3930 Cooling

Hi all,

I am looking to get a 3930SB-E and am struggling to decide on a cooler for it.

The H100 is currently my choice but I am open to suggestions. Been checking various places and asking around to see what peoples opinions of it are.

I don't intend to overclock the chip so I am mostly interested in cooling at stock speeds.

Go for something cheaper and that's quieter. Something like a CM 612S should be enough, although I'm not sure if that has LGA2011 support yet. The Alpenfohn K2 does and has PWM functionality so you can that running at low RPM and it should have no problems cooling the 3930 effectively and quietly.

The CoolerMaster 612S looks very nice - will have to find out whether it will support 2011 and how well it would cool the chip.

The hsf on my current machine is beautifully quiet and keeps temps right down. To be fair it is an Athlon X2 64 so hardly cutting edge.

If anyone else would like to counter with other suggestions or comments I would love to hear.

So close to new build ordering its exciting!

Other than the usual gaming and general use...

Heavy virtualisation work along with pic/vid editing to various extents.

My i7 work machine gets pushed pretty hard hence the move to additional cores.

You mean using it properly then... ;)

Just for games and general use would be a right waste of cash. Anyhoo, I'm using a H100 on mine at the moment at stock speeds 3.2 -> 3.9 Ghz. Works fine and is pretty quiet, maybe the H80 is another option for you?

Water cooling is something I had considered but would prefer to avoid at present other than the 'pre-made' loops such as the H100.

How are your temps Elric?

Having looked at a few of the air coolers such as the i30 and some others; they don't appear too bad at cooling and with low noise.

As you say for merely gaming etc it would be a waste but the extra cores really help when you have the number of VMs going along with other stuff.

Temps are fine (acceptable) for me with the stock 3.2 and turbo boost values. Right now, with 8 VM's running and a few other bits ticking over, I'm sitting at an average of 25 across the cores and a peak of 52 when I've been giving them a bit of a thrashing.

Fan noise is also not a problem, but it can get a bit noisy when testing with Prime95.

The Hydro series coolers are a pretty good compromise between air coolers and custom water loops, if you're sticking with stock speeds, then it'll work well, expecially when the system wants to kick the turbo mode in. :)

Those are decent temps considering the chip.

I'm guessing you have good airflow in your case to keep everything else cool.

Exactly my thoughts - I'm not looking to overclock so all I need is efficient, quiet cooling.

Hmm still not decided though! H100 is still strongly tempting me.

Go for it, the H100 will be ideal for stock and if you ever decide to turn up the wick it will give you some headroom.

Although my chip / board / case is ok for the stock speed / volts, I've been trying to get it cranked up but heat is a major sticking point at the moment so, I'm holding with it at stock for the time being until I decide if I want to go down the custom loop route.

I think the H100 has it. I have noticed quite a few posts/articles on issues with the pump - have you had any?

I was tempted to try a push/pull config but my case choice is highly unlikely to allow this short of screwing the pull fans on the outside. The only reason I considered this was to give greater cooling.

H100 keeps my 3960X under control at 5ghz (just) at full whack. The bonus with the H!00 is you won't be restricted to heatsink orientation due to memory heatsink sizes.

That's something I have noticed - some of these heatsinks require a great deal of space whereas the H100 just drops in.

Impressed your getting 5Ghz on it, must be pretty toasty?

I had a look at that but my concern is the space it takes, especially around the RAM.

I see that it is compatible with the x79 Sabertooth - I guess I would have to ensure all slots can be used (assuming low profile RAM).

Yeh, you need low profile ram with these things :) My Vengeance LP is absolutely fine.
