3D is overrated

Of course there is going to be more 2D tickets sold, because the fact is that there are less cinemas equipped for 3D than 2D worldwide.

I worked on on two of those above films and there was never any pretence that the 3D was going to sell more than the 2D ticket sales. However, it still makes a pretty healthy profit from the 3D compared to the cost required to do a Conversion or Shoot in 3D, that's what matters.

Also there are 2D screenings out there, sure there might not be as many in UK multiplexes, but they are still there.

I'm still not buying this rubbish about Prometheus either... so what if the midnight screenings were only in 3D... that's a small fraction of the opening box office. As I said before, my local Odeon has it on 3 times a day in 2D since it opened. If you really don't want to see 3D, go to a 2D performance. Ultimately if everyone hated it as much as people make out, then they would vote with their feet and either see it in 2D, wait for the home video release, or not at all. This currently doesn't appear to be the case.

someone also in the Industry who knows what he's on about... thank you! :)

I would bet good money on the fact that they would be in the same order if 3D was available on them or not.

3d is no more of a gimmick than colour film, or sound in movies.

Both had their detractors when they first came out........ but they're all dead now, and future generations never looked back (apart from the occasional hipster who only listens to the radio).

:D

so up to 50% additional gross is not worth mentioning?

your figures prove that 3D is commercially viable.Thank you!

That's not 50% additional gross

For every 3D ticket sold you're not selling a 2D ticket, so the extra gross is the net of additional 3D ticket revenue over the revenue you'd have got from 2D sales, less any sales you lose along the way if people don't want 3D but can't get to a 2D showing.

We got a LG 3D TV, nothing better then sitting down with the wife and kids to watch a 3D film. But I refuse to spend the silly prices the cinema charge for films and 3D films now.

I wonder how opinion in the general public is compared to on here

I wouldn't have gone to avatar if it wasn't 3d. I would also be more inclined to wait until tv release, even tho I have a 3d tv

Possibly... but the overall gross would be much lower.

Not significantly, I don't expect. People don't go and see films because they are in 3D - they see them with 3D as an extra they pay for. 'Much' lower is debatable.

I think 3D costs about 25% extra at most cinemas, so on about 50% of sales, you'd lose 25% of gross, however, without the money invested in making the film 3D in the first place, you may well end up making the same profit.

I really don't think the majority of people actively care about 3D.

I really don't think the majority of people actively care about 3D.

this is the case at the moment, but with all public opinion it's subject to change and change it will. New things need time, it has the support and the finances and there's lots of developments underway.
It will grow in and it will never leave us again.

And personally I'm not that keen on it in most films. Other than Prometheus, although I haven't seen avatar in 3d which is meant to be great.

That doesn't really answer my claim that most people dislike or are indifferent about 3D. It's also not adjusted for inflation. Oh look, here's a list that is:

Highest grossing films, adjusted for inflation:

  1. Gone with the Wind - $3,301,400,000
  2. Avatar - $2,782,300,000
  3. Star Wars - $2,710,800,000
  4. Titanic - $2,413,800,000
  5. The Sound of Music - $2,269,800,000
  6. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial - $2,216,800,000
  7. The Ten Commandments - $2,098,600,000
  8. Doctor Zhivago - $1,988,600,000
  9. Jaws - $1,945,100,000
  10. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - $1,746,100,000

I'll also provide the source - it's from Wikipedia which cites the Guinness Book of World Records as the original source.

So with the exception of Avatar, 3D is not relevant in terms of box office gross yet. And Avatar had a phenomenon around it by virtue of being the first 3D film, which is different to it being a genuinely good film or being a film that genuinely benefits from being in 3D.

It's also worth noting that only a few of the films in your original list are actually any good.

So failing to make the top 10 makes a film irrelevant? So going by your logic every film made in the last 10 years is irrelevant.

ok,not many films on the list are any good, but that's another discussion.

Also, wikipedia doesn't give that adjusted for gross thing any credibility.
That list is not a correct measurement of box office success.... the reason being, the older films have had countless re-releases and 1$ theater releases.
They've had decades to build up that gross.

Look,I'm not tryin to tell you what to watch or like or whatever. You love 2D,and I love 3D and 2D.
What is undeniable is that 3D IS the future of cinema, the numbers at the box office say so.Wether some arbitrary popularity poll suggests otherwise doesn't really phase me.I see and hear what's going on.

3D will stay.I'm willing to put my 10er against your tenner that it is here to stay.In 5 years we'll see.... Deal? ;) (Can I borrow my 10 from you? :p )

So failing to make the top 10 makes a film irrelevant? So going by your logic every film made in the last 10 years is irrelevant.

When the counterpoint put forward by my right honourable opponent was the top ten highest grossing films (unadjusted for inflation) then a rebuttal based on a properly adjusted list seems fair play.

I dont mind 3D but i wouldnt say it will "increase" my experiences of the film.

Some films lend themselves more to 3d so you couldn't really argue that unless you didn't like the films could you. that being the case it wouldn't necessarily have anything to do with them being 3d. ;)

Would be less inclined to go to the cinema I think if not 3d, Tron may have been another I would have waited for blu ray

I absolutely hate 3D, seen a fair few films so I can make a judgement, I originally was very interested in 3D but have to say in my opinion it doesnt add anything to the film experience, if anything I think it ruins the experience for me, just dont like it, but thats my opinion -
