Like in photoshop where you can allocate how much memory you use..

does anyone know if you can do the same for 3ds i got

4.0ghz i7 chip

1gb gtx 280 graphics card

and 6gb ddr3 ram

i want to use it properly lol :)

any advice would be great thanks :)

yea the issue is, when i high render stuff whilst im working on things... for instance using the 'turbosmooth' at '8' it just crashes and i have a good graphcis card and my cpu is running at 1% lol so... its like what do i do? i have a few links

something as basic as tht mouse and its 3dsmax 2010.

You should never ever need to use 8 iterations of turbosmooth, if you need that many polygons you should use a lower res mesh and a displacement. Using turbosmooth with 8 iterations on a 6 sided cube produces in excess of 700,000 polygons!

Also you do realise that in that picture you have set the turbosmooth iteration to 4 in the viewport but when it renders set it to 2? So your rendered result will be less smooth than what you see in the viewport? Also, you shouldn't be whacking the settings up to highest for test renderings either.

I'd advise reading some basic tutorials on subdivision modelling.

You can set the max memory allowance for rendering in mental ray under render setup>processing>memory limit.

yea thank you... well im just starting my degree so im just playing with it, and seeing what i have to do, thts the kind of advice i need.. thanks :) i just wanted to know why it crashed with the performance of my pc! you know? :)

Not in 2010 (Design in my case) you can't, it's been removed for some reason and theres just a conserve memory option, 2009 did have the option though.

The learning curve with 3dsmax is very steep, probably the most frustrating 3d app to learn (or so i'm told). Head over to www.cgtalk.com - biggest community for all things cgi related, very helpful, beginner friendly and full of industry veterans aswell.

that's annoying- is it just the design version?

where is the converse memory option? and ill have a look at tht now, tht site, i have 'maya' 'softimage' <------ thts what im doing next year '3ds' 'solid works' 'revit' 'inventor'

all i have to learn with in 3 years aswell as

iso draw, illustrator, photoshop, fireworks, etc... hense why i have a good pc, just need the right advise to get forward :)

nah trust me that's alias, pita, everything seems backwards.

Not sure I would guess it's on both as the core program is the same.

b1gdan - follow samione instructions, it's there.

damn brah 8 iterations is waaaaaaaaaaay too much, if you need a lot of detail export the base model into znbush or mudbox and add your detail in there and export a displacement map.
Much much more faster workflow

If you are just starting out with 3DStudioMax (Or any 3D modelling in general), then I would severely limit your poly count (to under 5,000 say) and first master low poly modelling. This will help you learn good working practices and make every poly count where it needs to. Also how have you made the dots on that dice? Boolean Extrusions? If so, then this produces some nasty geometry. As I say, learn to master low poly modelling first, then proper texturing techniques (Good UV mapping, UV unwrap, light baking etc), then start to look at working with high res models.
