3dConnect x1950 problems from fleebay

I just purchased a second hand 3dconnect x1950 PCI-E version GFX card to replace my old Nivida 7600GS. I managed to get the x1950 for £77 including the postage so I thought that was good.

When I received the item every thing looked good until I tried it out. With the lastest ATI Drivers 7.6 I failed to make it past a full run of 3dmark 2006. It would lock up at different parts.

The funny thing is the the old card worked perfectly with out any problems in 3dMark 2006.

Also it fails on the CCC overdrive stating VPU recovers.

Here are my PC Specs
asrocks ConRoe 945G-dvi micro-atx motherboard
Duo Core 2.4 (not overclocked)
North - Q 500W PSU spec +3.3v @ 35A, +5v @40A, +12V @16A, +12V2 @18A, +5Vsb 2.0A, -12V @ 0.5A, -5V @ 2.5W
Click here for a review of the PSU
ATI x1950 (not overclocked)

Air flow in case is good and GFX card is about 44c when idle.

What do you think is wrong? Is it the power supply? Should I try resetting the heat sink? Or should I just try returning it to the eBay seller?

I am running way more than he is on a 400W Nexus PSU and overclocked too. However a X1950 might take more watt than my 7900GS but no where near 100W more. I would still try a diff PSU just incase, or on a friends PC.

<edit> Oh and BTW.. G/F to me means Girl Friend, so use GFX ;)

Could try uninstalling drivers, using driver cleaner pro, and then reinstalling them. That PSU doesn't sound so bad from a review I just checked out, and it'd likely shut down if it was overwhelmed. Stupid question but you do have power connected to the card? :)

Sounds like a psu problem and when i saw the Q 500w i thought q-tec for a min before i saw north before it lol. Btw, you did put the pci-e power plugs in the card yeah? Also as might have been mentioned, get drivercleaner pro and clean ** old nvidia drivers out.

Also if possible try in a different computer see if its ok in that.

so nobody thinks its a dead card?
Not yet. Not until you've ruled out all the stuff mentioned above. If you just uninstalled your nvidia drivers (or worse just left them installed) and didn't use driver cleaner pro, that can cause a lot of problems. You could also check temps during gaming. Presuming you have power connected to the card, you could also try a different molex connector and make sure the video card isn't chained with anything else.

No aftefacting just straight lock ups. If I run the demo the music continues. Also if I try CCC overdrive then it keeps recovering from VUP errors and tries to post error reports.

How do I record the temps when running?

The PCI-E power connected is directly to he card with nothing else on that chain.

Check pci-e bios settings make sure all settings are correct and not overclocked or somit. Take the card out and reseat it, perhaps it wasnt installed properly last time?

Did you get reciept off seller btw for warrenty purposes?

I have the HIS X1950 and when i installed the latest drivers i had the same problem in CS. Either revert back to some older drivers and try them out or head over to ngo and get the optimized drivers like i did :D

just formatted with the Vista DVD (couldnt find my copy of XP) and the same happens lockups on the CCC overdrive and 3dmark 2006.

Already tried by reseat but I didn't post that here.

Going to try those another drivers next. BRB

Easiest way to check temps is find a game which runs in windowed mode and keep CCC open so you can see the temps. Or just use ATI tools as said above. Use the artifact tester and expand the spinning cube so it's filling most of the screen with CCC still visible. It'll warm things up nicely.

If it turns out to be overheating, check for dust clogging up the fan and heatsink on the card. Also check the heatsink looks to be in proper contact with the GPU and vram, and that the fan is spinning quickly.

cheers for the info I'll try both of them things and be right back. Just reloading windows XP from my clone.

Would lintel step speed make much different. Since I've turned that off in the bios things have improved I can now make a full run through of 3dMark 2006 but not every time it now crashes 1 in out of every 3 times I run it.

BTW I'm getting 5010 in 3dMark2006, so I'm happy with the score just not the crashing/lockups.
