3rd party or Canon?

Wouldn't waste the money on a genuine Canon one personally, they both do the same job.
No additional functionality in either of them, just the added cost.

I have a linkdelight grip for the 1000D and it's very solid construction for the money.
Batteries included were naff, but for £30 can't complain!

I got it second hand from TP, but it's definitely a Linkdelight one.

I'm guessing your already a member over there, considered buying one second hand to try? That was you would at least make 99% of your money back if you had to sell.

EDIT: they also have an Ebay store, I'm sure.

Got the official one in the 5DII after my 50 phoenix one died with an elec fault. Had to send it back to hk in the end. They did replace for new though. Not had a prob since. Isn't the Canon Mg alloy?

FWIW I went through the exact same decision process when I wanted a grip for my 7D. In the end I went with the Canon grip for the following reasons:

- Reportedly more robust construction
- I'd seen reports of problems with some 3rd party grips, like certain on-camera controls failing to respond when the grip is attached, and a higher rate of battery drain when the grip left switched on even when camera has gone into standby.

Regarding the problems with the locking wheel, as far as I know that's a problem with all versions of the grip, Canon and 3rd party, because they all have a plastic thumbwheel that wraps a metal bolt. I was given the following advice to help avoid problems:

- When you first get the grip, smear a little high temp grease on the screw thread
- Accept that when the wheel stops moving with moderate thumb pressure, the grip is tight enough. Stop there. No really, STOP! :D

i used the meike grip at all day sporting events before i got the 1D and found it nothing but sturdy and with 2 3rd party 1300mAh batteries lasted all day easily (~2000 shots). not experienced any function loss either.

There is a Canon grip on that auction site for £85 boxed etc. Search "canon 5d battery grip"

I have 3 5D's and one of the Canon grips. I looked at the copies but picked up a mint used Canon one instead.
