This is a deliberately non specific spec me. Im looking for a car that will last a good few years (i.e. is newish, and easy/cheap to fix should it go wrong), will be a nice place to spend 25k miles a year commuting, and isnt boring. Im fed up of buying cars because there cheap and then having to buy a new one a year later because it failed its MOT and isnt worth fixing.

So... what is there out there for around £4k? So far I can only think of an older ST220, but surely there must be others?

Go on motors... spec me! (or flame me, whatever it is you kids are into these days)

Shabby-ish pre-facelift one i think ?

Far from it. The shabby pre facelift ones are nearer £3k. There is a very wide price range for ST220s at the moment though. In one corner you will have someone selling a 53 plate with 80k for £4000, and then there will be somone else who wants £8000 for the same car with a few less miles on it. If you resign yourself to the fact that you will have to refurb the wheels on any ST you buy, there is quite a lot out there, either early face lift or late pre facelift in very good nick for £4000.

There just all 200 miles away :(

So is that it then, options for a comfy not boring cheap to run and fix car that will last a good few years for £4000 are basically an ST220...?

Thanks for the heads up from the last few posts :)

Theres loads of fun cars in that sort of budget but not neccessarily motorway cruisers as such even if they'd be fine for it.

Maybe a gen 7 Celica or something? maybe even the 190 one? Won't be as cheap parts as some but in all likelyhood a lot less will go wrong.

I'll vote for the Octy vRS. That's what I bought when I got fed up of my bangers breaking down. Mine was £4K with about 80K miles on the clock.

Reasonably fun when re-mapped and also pretty good MPG for the power. I managed 46mpg today on a 100 mile cruise! I was driving like a granny though.

I usually get 35 mpg with normal driving + some hooning. Or about 25 to 30 mpg with lots of turbo abuse.

Although I commute 70 miles a day none of it is motorway. Its all A roads and B roads. There large streches of A road done in a line of 55 mph traffic in 5th gear, but there are also a couple of towns to get through.

I know something like a Celica may be more fun, but I dont think it will be anywhere near as cheap to fix as a Ford. The Octavia still interests me though, mite have to stop and have a look in the Skoda garage on the way past in the morning.
