40-45k, what would you buy?

If you're not a petrol head, I'd seriously question what you're doing.

Don't get me wrong, I've had my fair share of fun cars when I was younger, but these days I much prefer the stress-free life that comes with not spunking all my cash on unnecessary stuff. If you aren't a petrol head, then don't become one, because it is an endless money black-hole.

Personally I'd spend that sort money on getting a decent <=20k motor, and the rest on something life-changing and memorable like a once-in-a-lifetime trip somewhere.

Something you'll remember on your deathbed.....no-one's gonna be lying there breathing their last, thinking "I'm so glad I really lived and drove that Audi saloon for 18 months".....

Yup at my point in life right now, I'd buy a decent used but reasonably new/low mileage ford fiesta or a Toyota Yaris or something like that, as long as it's got about 100-120hp that's enough.

Bonus points if it's got a naturally aspirated petrol and as little ******** on a possible.

A guy I know has an audi s4? I think.. He had some problems during a service as when bleeding the brakes they snapped off the nipple or whatever.. Garage was like... That'll be 2 grand for a pair of new front calipers!!
Apparently they are the same brembo ones they use on Lamborghini..

Ouch! In the end the garage took the calipers off and sent them to a specialist to re-machine/recondition them... Cheaper than new ones but it was still pretty expensive.

Yea, supercar performance but it's completely untamed and no safety equipment/software.

Yeah my dads old friend had a TVR.. I forget the model it's basically just a big engine on wheels, very fast but you have to know how to drive it, I think it had ABS, but no traction controls or anyof that other jazz, lethal in the wrong hands!

I don't think any of them even had ABS.

The old boss around that time, Trevor Wilkinson used to say that the traction Control was a very long throttle pedal travel and a very long brake pedal. In order to get WOT you had to really push the pedal down far apparently.

Theres something nice about simple cars like that, but you do have to know how to drive properly... my dad used to have a morgan style kit car, with out even power steering.. you really had to wrestle with it and 'drive it' to get the most out of it... so much fun to drive though..

I haven't gone through the entire list but I would consider Alfa Romeo 4C

I am not certain if the "boot" can hold a golf bag but it is reasonable tax, great performance, excellent mileage, looks like the dog's ******** and it is an Alfa. They say you should own an Alfa once in your life and at this stage you may as well go for it before going for the people carrier phase.

I really like the look of the Merc C class coupe. You don’t have to have the fire breathing V8 if you’re not interested in outright performance, but I think it’d be a nice place to be and they look decent.

Personally for £45k I’d be buying the most 911 that my budget would afford. Especially if it’s a weekend car.

Funnily enough you'd get a Morgan Plus Six for the price the OP is talking about. PH just did a buyers guide. With a Morgan you either get it or you don't. https://www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-buying-guides/morgan-plus-six-ph-used-buying-guide/49088

That would be an absolute riot to drive, in both the good and bad terms of the word, lol!

I wouldnt fancy having a crash in one, either!!!

It's basically like a lotus super 7 but with a more refined and gentrified appearence, lol!

It's not just about spending £40-45K on a car though - it's the running costs that come with those kinds of cars you've highlighted. Not all of them are crazy but....

As an example, I'm currently looking to replace my F11 530d Touring - a tyre for that costs around £150 plus fitting for something decent like a Michelin PS4. Swap to an X3 M40d with 21" wheels (which is one thing I've been looking at) and that almost doubles to close to £300 for a Michelin PS4 SUV. Of course you can get cheaper tyres but do you really want to be putting Linglong's on an M4? :D Put an M, RS or AMG badge on it and the service pricing doubles as well or more additional work needs doing at service interval time, or the intervals maybe less. Porsche servicing always seems quite reasonable but if something needs an actual repair, do you have the additional money for the Porsche parts which might be £200-300 more than the run-of the-mill Audi equivalent part.

Ultimately if you have the money for the running costs and potential repair bills down the line then why not but don't under estimate the repair bills some of these cars can throw at you. Even my 530d which has Adaptive Drive suspension kit on it from the factory, if one shock absorber goes, it's a cool £750 just for the part per corner plus fairly hefty labour on top. BMW quoted me £1200 to replace it but fortunately I had an approved used warranty so it was covered and that's on something relatively bog standard.

If you don't have the money every month then you probably need to be putting some of that £45K aside and spending £35-40k instead.
Of course. I appreciate everyone sharing their real world examples of these sorts of things because of course its a whole new thing for me. I definitely was a bit naive going into this search at the beginning but thats exactly why I started this thread. I am not concerned about the money as such but it is definitely something id have to come to terms with stomaching every year.

I appreciate all the suggestions in the last page or so, some great options. I do like the Mustang especially!

Being honest, currently leaning further towards picking up something on my company EV scheme which goes against everything I first looked at but with the costs involved its almost too hard to pass up on. I am looking at under £400 a month for a Tesla m3 (as an example!) for 2yrs, 8k miles and comes with servicing/insurance/tyres/roadside assistance and 4000 miles on a fuel(electric?) card. Really like the look of the BYD Seal, would need to see one in person though!

I almost bought a cerbera 4.5l. was a really tough call, I narrowed it down to that or a 350z .

in the end my head ruled my heart but it was so close. it's the only car I ever went in which set off car alarms

I know someone with that RS6 too, he buys most of his parts from Lamborghini as they're cheaper than the Audi equivalents.
