40% Xfire GPU usage bf3

Had a run on a 64 player caspian server just now, hitting just over 120 fps max, mainly in the mid 80's. Cards maxed at 90%. Im running the game with every detail on the maximum, HBAO on but blur turned off. Runs as smooth as silk. Cpu at stock speed.

granted my settings are low in bf3(low with mesh ulta) and 1920x1080 but my gpu usage is about 30% on each card.. to be honest it should not matter what settings you use in game... gpu usage should be able to pull 100% on each card regardless of settings?

either lots of fps on low settings or med fps with ultra settings.. am i only person that feels this way?
my game feels choppy at best and a single 7970 is defiantly better then 2 interms of smoothness and performance.

Presuming you have tried multiple drivers and cat profiles such as AMD_Catalyst_13.5_CAP1 ?

Ok i reinstalled bf last night (20 gbs download :s) and had a quick 10 mins. Game felt 100x smoother and usage was up to 50-60%, had to set the ingame frame limiter as i was seeing 80-250+fps and some tearing. Turned vsynch on and now its running 80-120fps . Will have another play this afternoon as didnt really get much time and report back

Out of interest what do the caps do? Ive never used/installed them before

1080p/60Hz or 1080p/120Hz ? My 1200p/60Hz with a frame limiter set to 59fps works my crossfire cards in BF3 to around 45-55% per card.

Have you disabled ULPS?

i'm using latest beta driver and caps... i did try a few different drivers and some did make a little bit difference but highest useage in bf3 i've seen on both cards is 48% with older drivers

1080p 120hz with frame cap at 120fps - vsync off.

Have you disabled ULPS?

yeah its disabled in afterburner.

Well that's your problem then. Your GPUs are not utilised because you're using low settings and therefore your CPU is bottle necking you to the extent of getting negative scaling.

Not really a lot you can do other than playing with higher settings or playing with one card. Two 7970s even on maximum settings should be extremely smooth.

I do find it hard to believe that his overclock will bring each card down to 40% usage (80%) total. He gets 99% with one card and those figures don't add up.

I have a similar problem with my 2 7970s in BF3.

If I run my cards at stock (1000/1375) I get low usage on any map/player count which can be anything from 40-75%.

If I lower my cards to 925/1375 my usage goes up to about 75-90%.

Disabling crossfire gives me a constant 99% usage.

I am running an i7 920 @ 4.1 and a resolution of 1080p.

So in my case BF3 does not benefit me running my cards at anything over 925/1375.

In my case it does, I have just tried my cards at 850/1375 and get an even higher usage.

Give me chance today I'll kill HT and fire up bf3 with some monitoring utils. You shouldn't be getting much of any cpu bottleneck on that setup.

Have you checked your cpu clocks while gaming? Just to make sure speedstep hasn't managed to get stuck.

CPU clocks are solid whilst gaming.

Because you're moving the bottleneck from CPU to GPU, you're lessening their potential.

Yes, downclocking my cards gives me higher usage but with the same framerate.

It means the CPU is not a bottleneck as its not fully utilising any of the threads.

No, it don't mean that, my 3570K used to be about 50% used in BF3 with SLI but SLI usage was 60%, CPU usage with 3770K is about the same but SLI ran normal at 99%
