400D Grip

I like the BG-E3 on my 400D, as it handles much better as everyone has mentioned. Though when travelling around on Holiday I take it off to save space.. I was surprised when I noticed it took 6 AA battries !

yup all functionality 3 buttons on the back, af selector, apature button and the other button. 2 battery trays (1 for AA and one for Lithium Ion batts) Feels solid to me. First thing i bought for it as the camera felt really small in my hands. So far i see no need to get an original instead.

Having a look on ebay there seems to be various different 3rd party grips including some with a whole host of other buttons and an additional LCD display, no idea how usage those extras are but they look funky. :p

um i can see if i still have the details somewhere for ya. but i know i did hunt around for it at that price.

Don't suppose you had any luck finding the details for it? If not, I might go for an official one as they don't cost too much more than the ones I can see.

Been looking into this a little and the third party ones made by YXTM (China) seem to be fairly popular with good reviews in regards to function and build quality.

The YXTM one I had on my 350 had a nasty habit of loosing the battery connectors when removing the AA's for charging.

Other than that, it was OK.

Genuine only for me now on, got a genuine one on my 30D.

no unfortunatly is was on my old bay account before someone tried to scam me and messed it all up. sorry.

I ended up ordering a 3rd party grip via ebay from a Hong Kong retailer, ordered on the 2nd of Jan and it turned up today (well impressed by that).

First impressions are good, build quality seems the same as the offical Canon one I looked at in Jessops a while back. All functions buttons work as they should, seeing as it comes with two batteries, a hand strap and little remote for less than half the price of the Canon one on its own I think it was a bargin.

Im debating whether I should get one for my upcoming 40D... but I would get the official one at around £100.

But i've heard they loosen themselves with poor tripod stability? Then I have to debate 2x normal batteries or 6xAA NiMHs...

Decisions, decisions!!

You mean 40D grip?

Yes, get the grip, and then get 2 x 3rd party batteries on the bay for about £5. Works as good if not better than the canon ones.

can you buy extra trays for the grips as would like to get rid of my 6AA one and have another tray with the extra 2x batts - i want to use my aa for my fashguns.

I couple of pics of the camera with the grip attached:-

Can't speak for the replicas but the official versions don't have trays for the two Lithium Ion batteries. They just slot straight in.

You sure? When I looked at the Canon one it was the same as the replicas, a pull out tray/cartridge which 2 batteries fitted to or the additional tray/cartridge that took AAs.

I honestly don't know what all the fuss is about. I'm sure most people still have smaller hands than me and i've not thought of the small grip as being a problem at all since i've had the camera. I did try other cameras out before i bought it including a MASSIVE olympus one in currys but i just liked the canon more.

For point of reference, i'm 6'5" and i can reach the outside edges of both the Ctrl buttons on my saitek keyboard at the same time. With my fingers spread apart from thumbtip to little finger tip is 27cm (well, just slightly over) and my middle finger is nearly 13cm long.

I think most people just bitch about mediocre points, its not like you don't get used to holding it, and if it doesn't hinder me when i'm taking photo's i don't get how the **** it hinders everyone else.

It's all a personal preference. I hate the look of the grips, rarely shoot portrait and have only ever ran out of battery power twice. I've been avoiding them until a few months ago when I noticed how I was holding my camera with a large telephoto. It was making fast panning harder so I invested in a grip as I felt it would improve my 'grip' and the balance of the setup.
