400D Grip

Yeah they look different, here's the one for the 350/400:-

How odd to have a different design. I know the form factor of the xxxD v XXD is different but the batteries still fit in the same way.

Learn something new every day. Cheers.

Could be different on the 350D / 400D grip but the 30D / 40D grip only uses a tray for AA batteries.....

Gord, how do you find the 40D grip? Does it remain secure at all times? IE doesn't work itself free?

Also can you use different mAh batteries? IE I get three 1600 mAh with the normal canon battery?

It's still early days with the grip. I've only used it for short periods so far but i've not had any problems with it.

Yes you can use different batteries. In the picture above the grey battery is a standard Canon one and the silver one is a 3rd part 1500 mAh. I've got some more 3rd party batteries on order so in future I will be using two 1500 mAh batteries in it.

Ah excellent, as I've found 3 1500 or 1600 (cant remember which) for £12 delivered.

Grip is on the shopping list but after a 17-55 USM IS

Assuming it's the same my 30D grip loosens about 1/16th of a turn on the locking wheel thing once a month with regular use. The first batches of grips were a bit dodgy IIRC :)

If it worries you just take a second to tighten the wheel every time you use the camera or possibly wrap the thread with a layer of PTFE tape.

The extra weight really makes the camera handle better so any minor niggles are worth putting up with.

I think I paid about £8-£12 for a spare 400D third party battery, which I got on the net. Which is a higher rated one than the standard Canon.
I was in a London camera shop in December 07 and they had a Canon battery on sale for £39 ! Shocking
