ive just bought a new hard drive which is Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 11 400GB 6H400F0 SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM

my motherboard is a EVGA nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2
when i try to install windows xp i install the seriel ATA (150/300)Raid drivers that come with the motherboard on a floppy, bios finds the hard drive as 400gb but when i try to load up windows i get the blue screen of death everytime saying un-mountable_ boot_ volume stop:(0x893499E0,0XC000014F,0X00000000,0X00000000)

If i install windows without raid drivers everything works fine apart from my hard drive is only reconised as 127gb.

is this a faulty hard drive in anyway or me not doing something right.
please help many thanks.

Pre SP1 versions of XP are only able to recognise HDDs up to 127Gb. There are ways round this:

  • Create an XP install CD with SP2 slipstreamed into it (google has plenty of links)
  • Create a C: of less than 127Gb and then partition the rest of the space as D: once XP is installed and SP2'd
  • As above but use Partition Magic to extend the C: into the empty space after SP2 has been installed.

You don't need the RAID drivers if you're running a single disk.
