40D V 5D

A tiny bit of felt isn't going to stop moisture from getting through the buttons, gaps and lens mount. The 40D isn't built better than the 5D because it has a few bits of felt tacked on, all I'm saying is that the 'sealing' you speak of won't be as effective as you hope. That being said I would pick the 40D since it suits my needs better.

The 5D is nearly 4 years old

5D = better noise, full frame, probably better built but its over 3 years old now.

I think I'd either go for the 40D now or hold off on a replacement for the 5D. As been said it's 3+ years old now

The 5D is one of the best DSLRs Canon have ever made

Ok its 4+ years old
Canon officially announced the 5D on the 22nd of August 2005. I make that roughly 2 years and 7 months.

Good spot - I was getting confused with the 1Ds MKII :o

Anyway, in terms of low noise; nearly 3 years minimises the advantage of the full frame sensor.

Yes that's correct, 5d has no seal around battery door so could potentially grab in moisture or water affecting the battery and terminals...a serious problem "should" the worst happen.

In this regard the 40D has better build quality. What is there to not understand about that?

Because there is more to build quality than environmental sealing?

For example the 5D does not have a built in flash whereas the 40D does. This means that the 5D has higher structural rigidity and will will be able to survive impacts in that area whereas the 40D is less likely to.

These are the specs that go along with this supposed April announcement.

I can't honestly see the specs being this good, especially for the price.

The new 5D II will not be released at Photokina, but instead will be a surprise announcement on April 22, according to a source I am unwilling to disclose.
The specs of the new camera are as follows (final name unavailable):

- 15.3 MP full frame CMOS sensor (vastly improved light-gathering capacity per pixel: improved micro lenses; miniaturized micro circuitry; enhanced signal/noise ratio)
- Weather sealing same as 1Ds Mark III

- Dual Digic III with all-new "CXR" NR system reported to best 3rd party NR software. Available as a C.F with 4 levels of customizable parameters.
14 bit A/D conversion

- ISO 12800 (C.F. up to 25600)

- Reported 1 2/3 stop sensitivity improvement

- All-new 29-point TTL CMOS sensor
with 12 cross-type for F/2.8 or faster lens
(35% faster than 40D)

- Micro lens fine adjustment for up to 14 lenses

- 300,000 exposure shutter durability

- 6.0 / 3.0 fps

- 3.0" LCD
922,000 pixels

- EOS Integrated Cleaning System

- Live View (improved from 450D; latest generation)

- 6/3 fps continuous shooting for up to 68 frames

- MSRP $3499, available June 2

yes but the specs are all over the 1Ds. I'm really not going to complain because to me that seems like astonishing value for money.

I brought a 40D in the end and while it taking a while to work out all the setting it does seem like a massive improvement over my 350D. I particularly like

Larger and brighter view finder
Lower noise at higher ISO levels
Better feel both in terms of build and ergonomics
Large rear screen
Faster autofocus
My menu option - makes changing setting quicker
quality of colour and overall image

bits I'm not keen on

have to buy a new shutter release as it not compatible with my old one.
too many options - why would you need third stops on ISO???
The view finder needs to stick out more as i keep leaving marks where my nose has rested against the rear view screen.

I would have liked the 5D but it just doesn't seem to be worth paying double the price for as there is little difference in image quality. I also don't see the crop sensor disappearing soon as it so much cheaper to make and can offer an image very close to a full frame camera.

If we get those specs for £1800 i will gladly eat my hat, shortly before getting a loan to buy one :)

Most of those specs are on the 450D or 40D anyway.
The only new element is an updated sensor and higher res LCD.

Prices have and still are really coming down. Competition from Sony and Nikon could mean the replacement for the 5D is around £1k by the end of the year.

The 1Ds M3 is vastly overpriced anyway due to supply and demand. It's also aimed at Pro's who don't think twice about paying £xk extra for a body with few additional features; It's the design and reliability they crave.

If those specs are correct and that price is even close I'll be selling my 5D and buying another one, immediately, no two ways about it.

Most of what you hear about the 5D is from people who don't have a 5D. In fact, most of them don't even own a dSLR
They babble on about the numbers, the specs, the comparisons and yet if you put a 5D in their hands they wouldn't be
able to produce a decent shot to save their lives. 99% of them don't understand what "Full Frame" really means to photographers.

I've used my 5D up mountain and down dale, in the pi$$ing rain, snow, sub zero temperatures, on beaches with the salt spray ..
you name it. It hasn't got clogged up, broken down, died, or missed a beat, nothing. I've never even had the sensor cleaned, it
doesn't need it. I've had one small bit of dirt appear in the viewfinder which will be sorted when it's serviced prior to sale.

The 40D vs 5D argument is like the 911 vs Boxster argument. As Clarkson correctly pointed out: If you own a Boxster
what it says about you is that you wanted a 911 but couldn't afford one :p

Silly people on Foums yes but respected review sites no.

I've done the same with my two 20D's during nearly 4 years of ownership :)

Just like if you own a 5D, you actually wanted a 1Ds but couldn't afford one ;) :p

Heh, almost a fair point. However, I can afford a 1Ds MKII (the only one I'd consider above the 5D/5D II vapourware)
but what I use it for would be like going to the corner shop in a lambo and I'd rather spend the difference on lenses :)
