470 or 480 query

well i was going to order the 480 tomorrow but i dont no if i should go for it now or get the 470 clock it upto the 480 and with whats left over buy myself a Crucial RealSSD C300 64GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive as its time i had a new drive, ive been using a old 500gb for over 2 years now

I put a small SSD in with my latest build, almost as an afterthought (60Gb vertex2). I was going to wait for the intel refresh later this year and go for a 300Gb ish drive, but figured I'd give the vertex a trial run.

Anyway, the difference is huge. I can definitely recommend an SSD as being a worthwhile investment.

Besides, I'm not sure I'd be 100% comfortable running a GTX480 on that HX520...

i tell you what raven its doing my head in just trying to decide what to do,ive never used a ssd before so i keep thinking i might not get it to work properly, been a while since ive messed about with anything other than normal drives

Simply plug and play, when I got my corsair 64GB SSD I was blown away by boot up times and how responsive my system is, best single upgrade I have ever done.

As above, the SSD will be detected in exactly the same way as a regular HDD. In essence it behaves exactly like an HDD. Except that it's faster. Much faster.

thanks all for the advice a 470gtx and a SSd out of the 2 Duff-man said and should be fine for a while,

I dont think moving from 2 x 5770 to a 470gtx is an upgrade mate. Personally I think you would be better off sticking to the 480gtx and getting an ssd later on down the line. SSD tech is moving very quickly and prices are coming down fast. Wait a few months and something better might be here. I can see you regretting not getting a 480 down the line if you go with the 470. :)

SSD's are great but I wouldn't get a lesser gpu for one.

I think he's making the right choice, SSD tech will get faster but you really can only tell the difference in SSD/HD benchmarks, in a real world scenario you will not notice the difference with a 64GB drive that will be used 90% of the time for reading rather than writing. A 64GB SSD now is the right way to go, Sunderland has stated he is going to overlock the 470 so if he hits 750-800 on the core he is already in the 480 performance ballpark.

SSD's are great I have had one for well over a year now, but I really wouldn't get a lesser gpu for one. I have also come from a 4870X2 and the upgrade to a 480gtx only became really apparent when I overclocked my 480. I dont think a 470gtx even overclocked would show much difference to 5770 xfire.

If Sunderland was coming from 1 x 5770 then a 470gtx would be fine, but coming from 2 x 5770 I dont think its worth going for a 470gtx. 2 x 5770 is a fast setup. I know Sunderland and I really do think he will regret not getting a 480 later on down the line.

hi razor m8 i only have 1x5770 in my pc now,i use the other 1 in my htpc so would it be stil worth it to go for the 470 and like you do no what im like i keep thinking of that 480

Personally I've just gone through exactly the same decision, and the deciding factor for me was whether I could legitimately upgrade to SLi in the future without any bottlenecks.

Unfortunately as I only have a Q9450 Yorkfield and not an i7, I wouldn't be able to go SLi with a 470/480 and not receive a bottleneck. As such I decided to get the best single GPU solution and go for a 480.

I fear you'll be in the same boat as the the Phenom X4 955 Black Edition is not far off the Q9*** Yorkfields, yet quite far off the i7's. So if you're not looking to upgrade your mobo or CPU any time soon I'd stick with the best single GPU you can get and go for the 480 :)

The extra v-ram is always a bonus too and should help future proof you.

It's a tough call. There is no 'right' answer, and you should probably listen to those that know you better, rather than those of us just offering impartial advice.

I will only comment that having a SSD makes a huge difference to the 'feel' of the computer in general. Far more so than a huge CPU upgrade for example. But it won't boost GPU power, so if framerate in games is all you really want, then the 480 is the one to consider.

I see you have split up the 5770's. I think the 480 would be the right card for you. Give it a few months with the 470 and you will be thinking about the 480. It will always be niggling you at the back of your mind. You have the money for a 480 so go for it, its a beast of a card. Also games like metro and GTA maxed out use more than 1.2gb of vram, which lands it in 480 territory. Who knows what future games might also need that extra bit of vram. The 470 is a great card there is no denying that, but if you have the cash the 480 is worth going for.

As for the SSD you can always grab one in a few months time. At least this is what I would do if I was in your shoes. :)

right sorted im going for the 480 and will get a SSd later on next month,if i need a new PSU i will buy one from what i make on my 5770,cheers to all and razor spending my money again m8,nice

LOL... Its always a pleasure to spend your money mate. Oh and welcome to the 480gtx club, I am sure you are going to be blown away by it. ;)
