4770K - The CPU that just keeps on giving!

I just looked at when I bought my 3770K and it was 3 April 2013 for 182 pounds. It's been running almost 24/7 at [email protected] with my 32GB DDR3 Team Group Xtreme LV-2400 memory on a OCUK B grade sabertooth Z77 i picked up for 120 pounds. I've gone through 4 graphic card upgrades since then. I still see absolutely no reason to upgrade yet. Talk about value for money! I used to upgrade every 6 to 12 months before that!

Quite the chip i need 1.252v in bios for 4300 on core and uncore. So i pegged the nirthbridge chip at 4300 as well. If you have fast ram on these you still get great performance you really notice a really large dip in fps when the bios randomly reset the ram back to 1600mhz one time. So if you are able to do this really... do it and sit back until 2019.

my other haswell cpu (4770k) would need around 1.28v for 4,3ghz. so lost the lottery on that one.

I'm much in the same boat. Mine is running @ 4.5Ghz and has been great from day 1. I can see at least another year out of this, by then I will just do a complete upgrade with new case, water cooling etc.

I have mine running at 4.6ghz, 1.33v. Still a beast of a chip, wouldn't have been able to get there without delidding I don't think but even so, definitely the right choice replacing my 2500k @4.8ghz with it. Trying to get all my water cooling parts bought now + a new case along with maybe some new storage so when the time comes in a year or two I will just need a new CPU, mobo and RAM.

Think I could push it further with some better cooling but for 24/7 I'm not going to moan at 4.6ghz.

Mines been running at 4.7 from day one. Aircooled. No delid. Whatever voltage the motherboard is automatically putting through it (monitoring says it 1.296 at full speed). It's the easiest and most stable overclock I've ever done. I just put it all together and had the Asus utility find the overclock. It's going to have to be something pretty amazing to get me to upgrade.

That's pretty darn impressive. I'd say try and push it further, not going to be much difference in performance even if it got to 5ghz but I like chasing numbers.

Good thread, I’m currently without a PC as i re purposed my fx8350 build into a mining rig, I was looking at a Ryzen build as the 1600 is looking a good price, but the cost of DDR4 has put me off, I’m looking at a 2nd hand 4770 for £145 and a 4790 for £155, and a cheap motherboard, Asus H81M-PLUS for £50. I think it’s the bases of a great cheap for a living room VR/1080p gaming build paired with a r9 290 I already have.

Still need a micro itx case, PSU
and storage though

I just got a 4670k pretty cheap and trying to overclock to 4.4ghz but when I set it in the BIOS and apply and restart Windows it reset back to stock? any ideas?

My motherboard is Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3.

Some boards auto reset if upon restart the clock is too high and the voltage isn't enough. What voltage and have you tried lower than that?

Ok so I tried the "quick boost" menu in my BIOS and set it to "turbo" this supposedly gives it 4.4ghz

After that the PC wouldn't boot. Blinking white cursor after BIOS screen.. CPU is still being read in BIOS though.. any ideas?

I tried windows 10 startup repair but nothing.

Reinstalling Windows 10 on a separate drive now to see if it fixes.

Seems it was one of my HDD's not allowing it to boot. Unplugged and plugged it back and Windows boots fine now.

Anyway, this is my BIOS settings at stock, what do I play around with to overclock my 4670k? any tips would be appreciated.

Ah OK, what options does it have under the “voltage” tab? Would have thought all the options would be there

Overclocking generally is just increase the clock ratio until it’s unstable, then bump the voltage up a bit, repeat until you either hit a multiplier where the CPU won’t stay stable or the voltage is too high

I'll check shortly. I was adjusting the multiplier and it was showing 4.2, 4.4 etc but when rebooting it was reverting to stock. Not sure why it wasn't saving.

Also on the second picture I posted above on the "quick boost" I set it to Turbo but it didn't save either.

That is strange, I would first try clearing the CMOS (unplug everything and remove the battery for a few minutes) then seeing if there’s any BIOS updates for your board. I know if you pick something wrong and the board fails to boot it may reset itself but that shouldn’t happen if you leave all voltages on auto and change only the clock ratio to start with.

Not sure what else to suggest, you’re definitely selecting “Save and exit” and not “Save profile” or something? (Sorry if that’s mega basic but it could be overlooked)
