4770K - Where am I going wrong?

I am trying to overclock my 4770K Haswell to a half decent clock whilst remaining stable.

I'm currently at 4.5Ghz with Core Voltage at 1.25 but it keeps giving the BSOD after a few minutes running OCCT or Prime95. I've had a quick look at the log file and the offending file seems to be ntoskrnl.exe and nvlddmkm.sys.

I didn't even think going to 4.5 would be such a strain for it. It's starting to get extremely annoying now.

Really?! I swear I read somewhere that anything over 1.25 will make it an unhappy chip. Maybe that's BS then :p

Will knock it up to 1.275 and report back.

Another thing, off topic a bit. I was told that when you have two cards in SLI, it only uses one lot of memory. So I have 2 x 2GB GPU memory, does that equal about 4GB in SLI?

I know you said just use the PC instead of synthetic testing but just wandering around the desktop seems perfectly fine.

I did some OCCT and the issue was it said one of the cores got too hot so it stopped the test. I have an Antec Kuhler 620 with one fan, but come Christmas will have 2 x Corsair SP120 on it.
 
Don't forget to try increasing the VRIN voltage. In order to get my 4770K prime stable (8Pack will hate me ;)) at 4.4Ghz, I had to use these settings:

1.85v VRIN
1.256v vCore (it was a pain in the ass increasing the voltage by 0.005v each time I got a BSOD)

Another good way to test for stability is to run an x264 benchmark. If your PC can finish all 8 passes, you are well on your way to stability.

I can't be bothered to go through all that hassle again to see if the CPU can do 4.5 or 4.6GHz :/

Noob question - what's VRIN voltage? I'm guessing vcore is simply just voltage going to the actual cpu.

Do I need to make any changes to my memory at all? I read some people have fiddled with XMP. Is that recommended?

"CPU VRIN External Override is the voltage your motherboard’s VRM provides the CPU" - Source

That's a really good guide for overclocking a Haswell processor, even if you don't have a Gigabyte board. My advice is not to worry about Uncore. I got fixated on it and wasted many, many hours before finally setting it back to "auto". It makes very little difference to non-benchers.

Something I neglected to mention is that I set CPU VRIN Override LLC to "extreme" to prevent any droop. I also have all of the C-states enabled so that my PC uses as little power as possible at idle.

I can't comment on the RAM stuff because I have awful Kingston ValueRAM at the moment. I'm waiting for my new 2400MHz C10 stuff to arrive on Monday :)

this seems like nuclear science compared to just increasing the vcore on an 2500k. What easy overclock can i achieve by just increasing vcore only and multiplier?

Exactly the same card.

Different Boost frequencys.

It depends on the silicon in hand what can be gained from OC with multi and Vcore only. Cooling and quality of components such as MB, PSU etc also effect this.
 
Cheers buddy. Everything has seemed spot on for gaming at 4.5 now - nice and stable. My GPU still needs some time spent on it but I doubt I'll get much out of it as it's the MSI 770 Gaming Edition and I don't think it's meant for overclocking much.

In other news, I found disabling Hyper Threading significantly increases my BF4 stability and has stopped all the random FPS stutters.
 
sorry to hijack thread but no point my creating a new one might as well use this since its to do with the same thing.

I am attempting my own 4770k overclock with the asus maximus gene z87 board. some options are confusing me but this is the steps i took so far to overclock. I'd be happy with atleast 4.4 as long as temps and volts are ok but i want to get as high as i can.

I disabled all the C states, turbo mode and eist (which i think is speedstep technology)
i was going to put the vcore to 1.25 and the core multiplier to 4.4 until i saw a target cache speed and a cache vcore. i read somewhere that i should keep it as close to my core multiplier for best results?

so should i set both the target cache speed and core multi to 44x?

Gosh dont tell our friends Setter and Jono that. They claim much better fps and smoothness with the threads turned fully on. Still opinions always vary.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it has its benefits in some games but particularly in BF4 when I was experiencing random drops in FPS for a split second I found it totally went when I disabled hyper threading.
