4790k idling at 60c and CPU throttling in AIDA when XMP set (2400c11)

Hi.

Everything below is at stock, no oc other than the XMP.

So I finally decided to get a better cooler than the stock one for my rig and I went for a H60 as it fits nicely in my case and I got it for a bargain.

I am going to do a mild overclock but realise I won't get too much from that cooler.

I tried AIDA last night before and after changing the cooler and I could see something was wrong straight away as the temps approached 95/100 after a few seconds.

Having been playin around I can get my temps down to about 77 after a few minutes of AIDA with FPU so I'm much happier now but I've had to turn the. XMP off on my RAM so I'm currently at 1333.

Can anyone help me with some settings that will help me get say a 4.6ghz oc and keep my RAM at 2400c11?

Thanks a lot.

is the h60 properly secured ?

did you clean and put fresh thermal paste on the chip prior to fitting the h60 ?

might not be able to overclock to well using 16gb going on past threads, do you really need the 16gb, if you do might have to slacken the timings.

but first off i'd look at sorting the temp issues out.

I tested to see if the h60 was secured and it seemed to be fine.

I then tightened up a touch.

Now I'm at 90c in bios and I'm in a right mess.

I assume I've spoilt the paste and now I need to reseat?

Trouble is I have no compound and have no idea where to get any from tomorrow.

COuld I have done something worse?

best thing to do is take the cooler off and check the state of the thermal paste on the cooler and the processor.

it only needs a small amount on there, a grain of rice is one size comparison i've heard before, if theres to much on and its spread to thickly it could cause temp issues.

when you removed the old cooler did you clean the processor off ?

and when you put the h60 on did you put fresh paste on the processor ?

I have done this but the h60 comes pre-applied with paste so that's not an issue.

I've stuck the intel cooler back on with what's left of the paste from the CPU and the intel cooler and it's now idling away at about 51c which is obviously miles better than where it was.

So I can chill out and go to sleep, is an idle temp of 50c with a very poor application of paste to be expected?

This is stock with no XMP.

Thanks.

HWmon.

I struggled to get one of the h60 bolts off when I removed it to replace with the intel cooler.

Maybe I overtightened it slightly or something.

Anyway I think I should have maybe made myself a little clearer.

I was more than happy with my non XMP temps but was looking for some way of retaining my ram speed while keeping my temps down.

Although I had thought that I should make sure my h60 was properly tight anyway so don't think I was just blindly following what you said :)

Thanks for your help.

I'm hoping some new paste will put me back to where I was of better.

XMP will be whacking up your volts probably, try to overclock the memory manually whilst keeping the voltages to a minimum.

Thanks.

Am I best just leaving the ram at 1333 until I've got a reasonable overclock then worrying about the RAM?

I really wasn't expecting the ram oc to hit my cpu temps so hard!

Thank you.

Oh by the way, yes I do really need the 16gb as I use this system for lightroom and photoshop too.

If I have to clock it lower but hopefully tighter then so be it.

Thanks.

yeah thats the best bet, then once you find the sweet spot for the processor see what you can do with the ram.

didn't think xmp would cause any volt issues, but tweak things manually, check the 8 pack forum hes put some guides up that should help.

Thanks.

It's because XMP raises all kinds of voltages on the CPU to get the memory stable, these chips run hot enough already on stock voltages.

You should be able to get 1600mhz easily without any voltage increases as the 4790K officially supports it, beyond that you're in overclocking territory so your result will depend on your particular parts and how much voltage you're able/prepared to use.

Thanks.

Today's going to be a long day and I've been dreaming about warped motherboards and crushed cpu pins!

Realistically, if I just stick the h60 back on with the old paste, what sort of temp differences could I expect from a proper application of brand new stuff?

If I can't get any thermal paste today I might be forced to try a refit with the old stuff on.

Also, I'm in Manchester, are there any high street shops sellin decent paste?

Maplin and pc world don't seem to have anything great.

Thanks.

really depends on the state of the old stuff when refitted, there might be a few degrees different, but it shouldn't stop the processor performing ok for every day use.

checked the pc place and it has ARCTIC COOLING MX-2 listed on the website which is ok.

Thanks but I did check and out of stock.

Think I will just do my best with what's left over and order some from here when I'm happy everything's back to normal.

Thanks again.

The more I think about it, the more I feel like I haven't actually damaged anything but until I get home I'll still have nagging doubts.

I guess I could have warped the board, socket or the bracket but I only tightened by the tiniest of amounts...no idea how checking the h60 was seated properly then tightening a whisker could get me to such a bad situation.

Also, in bios last night I noticed that at 1.218v I was idling at 50c+ @4400mhz.

On the stock cooler with a poor paste application does that seem alarming to you? This was without the XMP loaded.

Cheers.
