Anyone else find that using the above settings, the game is just a little bit too much for the 4850 ? Pretty much anytime theres some grass/foliage, it chugs a bit and aiming the mouse is pretty jittery, so the Chernobyl bit is really bad. The only cure i found was turning off the AA and turning off Smooth Smoke Edges, that keeps the game running at a smooth 60+ FPS. Is this the same for anyone else ? Some people say they max it out on an 8800GT with the same settings no problem, i just dont get it.

cod4 runs fine for me at 1920x1080, max settings, 4x AA

This Review shows a 4870 1Gb running the level you're talking about - "All Ghillied Up" at an average of 59 FPS at 1920 x 1080 - even this card will therefore have some quite low "lows" to produce this as an average figure.

I do wonder how folks with less powerful cards can say they can max this game out at this res - I play it at 1280 x 1024 and the same level isn't 100% smooth...

I get an average of about 85FPS with a stock 8800 GTX, at 1280x1024 with 4xAA all highest etc.

The last drivers I downloaded for the 8800 GTX gave a ridiculus boost in framerates :p

I get the following with a stock X1950XTX at 1280x1024 - All maxed

Frames: 11086 - Time: 242598ms - Avg: 45.697 - Min: 27 - Max: 95

Theres a known and unfixed bug with COD4 that on certain rigs causes massive slowdowns especially around foliage and theres not much you can do to fix it except extensive upgrades or sidegrades :| hope your not running into that.

My 8800GT 1920x max res 4x FSAA was fine for single player - min 40fps average around 90. But I had to drop some details to keep a nice 100fps when playing multiplayer.

I have just got a 4870 1gig, and all is great though there some maps that stutter a bit dont know if its just bad coding or issue with drivers/card.

I was getting a big thrill using V sync monitor refresh 60fps and boy does that look good but the more maps i play the more i see stuttering so have taken V sync back off "But hey still looks amazing at 100 plus fps @ 1920 X 1200

Also on my ATI HD2900XT i think i got allot more glow effect in COD4 than i do with my new card or is that just me ???

as you are beginning to see, the 48 series cards score well in benchmarks but as your experience is with real life gameplay the cards are a flop. its been the life story of ati, best thing you can do is lower the settings or drop the resolution. failing that only option is to get a nvidia card.

I couldnt disagree more. my 4850 wipes the pants off any nvidia card I have had.

lol. how are the cards are a flop? some/most people here seeing good performance and have no problem running cod4 .

if the cards are a flop everybody would be getting the same poor performance.. so what your saying is crap tbh..

Mav hates ati and can't bear to see them doing so well again after there 2-3 series were not so great cards. More the 2 series. Jedi Fragger said the reason more people are having trouble with ati cards because they are outselling nv at ocuk by a ratio of 5-1. Is this because the new 4 series are rubbish i don't think so the proof is in the sales just like it was with g80 g92. Nv cards had way more problem threads back then than ati did. Situation is reversed this round but there is valid reasons not because all the cards are rubbish just so many more people have the cards.

Think the other reason is mav just loves to wind people up.

hmm well all systems are different hence the different results, i am an nvidia fan and i wanted the gtx280 but didnt have enough so bit the bullet and got a 4870 1gb instead ( bought around the time when nvidia prices went up ) anyway must say im impressed had a 8800 gts 640 previous, with this and cod 4 i get 60 - 90 fps running at 2560x1600 medium settings which is a big difference from my last card.

Hardly a failure, my 4870 was anywhere between 15-40% faster than my 8800GTS512 which cost me MORE than the 4870 did just over half a year earlier, with the same setting and res, but is the cheaper card, with additional features.

Thats not a failure, current ATI cards play most games well; and have forced the market to bring faster performance to the market cheaper; you really think Nvidia dropped the price of the GTX280 from £400 out of good will?
