4870 1GB GDDR5 version ever comming?

Just been looking at the prices on OcUK... the Asus 512MB card is the same price as the Powercolor 1GB board

The variation in prices between companies just baffles me, especially since these are all reference boards!

A lot of people will pay the premium for a more recognised brand name such as Asus, or maybe specifically for an Asus card.

It's no different to those who'll always buy an NVidia or ATI card even when it's not the logical choice. The manufacturers know this and thus will load their pricing to start with to milk this section of the market, only coming down to the same levels as other manufacturers when they need to.

They'll also throw in a longer warranty as a sweetener.

Its hilarious, people pay more because Asus is a bigger name to them than sapphire or 3dclub, powercolor and so on. So far every single range of cards I'd seen while working in a computer net sales company, Asus were the worst for RMA's. Mostly as their own "improved" cooling used awful quality fans, 98% of the failed Asus's had faulty fans. Obviously fan design, cooler design changes and sources of both change but based on past experience they would simply be the company i trust the absolutely least for ATi gfx cards.

I'd considering getting one when they are all still reference cooling all the same with different stickers IF they were the same price as others, or cheaper. BUt when non reference versions hit, not on your life.

1gb version of these cards just isn't needed. I can barely see the difference between 4xaa and 16xaa even in reviews where they zoom in on a TINY part of the picture and massively blow it up they still look almost identical. IN real gaming, you can very very rarely see the difference between 4xaa and 16xaa, baring the odd game with a terrible engine, incredibly old game thats actually limited resolution rendering and simply being upscaled with increased degredation in the image anyway.

Hell, I've been playing lotro a lot lately, no AA is very obvious, 2xaa almost completely gets rid of most jaggies and in general movement without paying very specific attention its barely noticeable. 2xaa to 4xaa and theres next to no difference, and 4xaa and up i just can't see the difference. Thats playing on my 1680x1050 or my 1920x1200 resolution.

Remember, to a large degree, higher resolution reduces the need for AA aswell. I'd be happier with higher res on a much smaller screen with smaller resolution, but on a decent screen resolution(which would be the only time you'd need more memory) AA to ridiculous levels just isn't needed.

24xaa is as much e-peen flexing as having quadfire or a skulltrail for gaming. Take some screen shots of your favourite game with different levels of AA, is the difference between 2/4/8/16 really that big?

Surely Powercolor for ATI are just as highly recognized (after all they have been an ATI board maker for quite some time)

Asus have fingers in many pies (under one brand or another) - maybe for people NOT in the know , but I would be surprised OCUK would be affected by that (being priced majorly for those IN the know)

Maybe not necessary of 24" screens, but on those lucky enough (whom I hope to join shortly) to have a 30" I reckon 1GB card may become useful

I was told by someone at OC that the 1gb 4870 Powercolour is at least 2 weeks away.

Gonna be a good early-mid August - Got the 4870 1Gb, the X2 and the Cat 8.8's too ;) Then late Aug possibly GTX280+ and out of that a possible price cut on existing GTX260/280's :D
