4870 1gb or GTX 260 (216)?

at that res your only talking about a couple of fps because the 4870 1gb scales better but then the 260 is a better overclockers and is more stable and has a higher min fps in most games so i would agree and go for the 260...

260 - again minimum FPS, especially on that res. Its the safest bet, especially if you are playing games like, Crysis and Far Cry 2 and don't want a slide show.

I just reviewed a GTX260 216 (black edition) To say I was blown away is an understatement. Hopefully we will get a 4870 1GB soon to throw into the mix.

Review Here

Wow. After reading that review along with another (here), it's such a tempting card to buy. I mean, I haven't been considering upgrading my 8800 Ultra, but after a bit of research, I've worked out that if I sell my Ultra with its after-market cooler, I'll only have to pay a little over £100 for the XFX GTX 260 'Black Edition', and that is certainly very tempting....

I'd say right now a GTX 260 is a better bet right now. as long as its the 216

Edit: Actually, looking at prices the 1 gig 4870 is a better idea.

If price for performance is on your mind, then 4870 1gb. If not then GTX 280, or with that monitor just go for 4870 X2 ;)

I am asking myself EXACTLY the same question.

I am building a rig with a 1920x1080 res monitor. I had decided on the Powercolor ATI HD 4870 1GB a few weeks back when it was under £200, but now it looks like it's price has shot up to £220..
I've just been reading a lot of reviews on these two cards and it seems they perform incredibly similar in games and I doubt you'd notice any real difference.

I'm actually swaying towards the GTX 260 (216) now that the 1GB 4870 has shot up in price. It looks like it runs cooler, uses less energy, has more stable drivers and is a similar price to the 4870.
Also, most of the 260 cards come with much longer warranties.

I've had two 4850s in Xfire and two 4870s in Xfire, and ran them singly as well. I now find the GTX 260 a better "all round" performer than the ati cards. I can't comment on the 1gb 4870 though, never had one, so I reckon its between those two, 260 would be my choice though.

Please go away and come back when you have the slightest iota of what it is you're talking about. Thanks. :)

I know exactly what i'm talking about, crap divers, noisier, and hotter - but cheaper.

As someone else said, money no object, Nv - bang for buck ATI.

:)

Thats a good way to look at it...

I'd say the 260 or 280 would be better for that res due to the more stable baseline framerate and higher minimums - which is going to be a lot more apparent than the average/max when playing at that kinda res.

I like w3bbo's review above I think it shows nicely how an overclocked 260 on 180 drivers stacks up tho it would be nice to put an overclocked 4870 against an overclocked 260-216 now they are similar in price as I think the slightly better overclocking on the 260 would edge it.

Tho if you want to run farcry2 with ultra settings and get playable framerates at resolutions above 1920x then your going to need a 4870X2 or 260 SLI - I get 60+ fps "most of the time" with those settings (4x FSAA) at 1440x900 and 40-50fps at 1920x.
