4870 1gb or GTX 260 (216)?

were did u hear that ? runs cooler my bum it barely handles the heat

eh?

there was a couple of faulty batches of 200 series cards... but with a properly attached cooler (and any card you buy now should) then the 200 series runs cooler and uses less power in idle than pretty much any high end GPU released in the last couple of generations.

running furmarks on my heavily OC'd 260GTX on stock cooling - the fan speed doesn't even increase - if I knock it up to 60% (which just becomes loud enough to hear over my PSU) it will drop the temps by another 4C.

I know exactly what i'm talking about, crap divers, noisier, and hotter - but cheaper.

As someone else said, money no object, Nv - bang for buck ATI.

:)

TBH if the graphics cards market is like any other, he is right. ATi offer a much much better deal. But nv has a better quality finish as it were.

...gaming with a 30" but happy not to run at max 2560 res :)

A screen that size was probably quite expensive, i don't see the point in spending so much on a big screen only to then not pick up a X2 which will allow to actually play games properly on it, just to save a 100 pounds or so

Look at the 280 v 4870X2.

X2, no doubt cheaper and faster in most games, but more problematic, hotter and noisier.

Lol, my 4870 was like 50C plus in a matter of minutes from boot. 260 under load runs at 48C and is a lot quieter!

it is quiter but not cooler then 4870 at least not mine. if u consider then 4870 fan spins at 14% .

how ever i agree that nvidia fans are quieter. as u can run at 45 % and the sound will be alright. not like ati but if u will put the same fan speed on both 4870 and 260. 4870 will be lower temp well mine is.

Most of the reviews of these two cards show that the difference between the two is minimal. You probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two ingame.
So then you need to start looking at other things, such as heat, cooling, noise levels, energy, warranty, stability, drivers, etc.
I do think too many people just look at graphs and see a GFX card perform literally 3-4fps more in a game and make their desicion based on that alone.

Most of the reviews I have seen show the 260 does run cooler than the 4870.

just ordered the Powercolor 4870 1GB a few hours ago, did very little research on the subject, just googled 4870 v 260, and I liked what I saw regarding the ATI card, will be pairing it up with an OcUK Hanns-G 28" WS, I think overall the the ATI 1GB card offers the most bang for bucks, both look to be very good cards though.

Hmm that black edition 260 XFX review was pretty good from looking at that alone it seems a better card overall then even the old 280 ;)

I liked the bit where they said the fan hardly revved up even during the benchmarking.

Makes one wonder how good the revised 280 is gonna be...

fan speed 32% in rivatuner all case fans on lowest speed

Having just switched from a Powercolor 4870 512Mb to a 1Gig version - it's a different card IMHO, MUCH cooler even on auto fan, and smoother in games. In a cool room last night it was idling at 60 degrees on 2% fan.

Don't understand why card temperature is an issue, particularly when a 4870 exhausts out the back

You can't compare percentages - his fan at 33% is running over 500rpm faster than mine is at 40% which is going to be a big difference in noise level... at 1900+ RPM mine is around 36C idle.

I wasn't really trying to compare fan RPM. Believe me, 60 degrees and 2% fan on a stock 4870 is good going, which is more the point I was making.

TBH all this nVidia / ATI thing between the GTX260 216 and the 4870 1Gb is so close as to be irrelevant in real world terms. Buy the card of your choice - plug it in - play games - have fun.
