Hi all i know recently there have been a lot of complaints about the idle temps of the 4870 X2, Idle temps of 85 is in my opinion isnt realy good.

My 4870X2 Core 1 idles at 85 C with fan speed on default. With 40% fan speed it idles at around 50 - 55 C and loads at about 80 so its no too bad.

Core 2 idles at about 45 C with default fan speed and with 40% about 36 C which is realy good, although there is a difference with the temps still since from what ive heard one core is running in 3D mode.

Is there ever going to be a fix for this? I know my GPU works well but theres still a problem here no matter how high the fan speeds are?

Would it possible to RMA to my 4870X2 because of this issue even though ATI says these temps are compleatly normal?

Thanks

Yeah ive heard of those. Im not into betas though, going to wait for the drivers to come out fully. Hopefully that will be soon.

Anyways going get in touch with overlclockers tommorrow to see if this is realy normal for these cards or RMA if its allowed. Kind of 50-50 realy dont know if i should just wait for better drivers etc.

Thanks

What are you using to read those temps and "which" temps are they ?

On mine, in Everest, it shows GFX Temps:

GPU1: GPU Diode (DispIO) 62 c (144 F)
GPU1: GPU Diode (MemIO) 66 c (151 F)
GPU1: GPU Diode (Shader) 64 c (149 F)
GPU1: GPU VRM 49 c (120 F)

GPU2: GPU Diode (DispIO) 48 c (118 F)
GPU2: GPU Diode (MemIO) 49 c (120 F)
GPU2: GPU Diode (Shader) 49 c (118 F)
GPU2: GPU VRM 50 c (122 F)

The latest betas, or manually adjusting your fan profile can drastically reduce your idle temps

:S

yes ive done that already, temps have improved but its still an issue if you know what i mean.

it reads 85 C on everest :)

Your temps should be a lot cooler with that gpu fan rpm. I run at 50-54c on core 1 at 1800rpm. I think your gpu core is stuck on 3d mode instead of underclocking to 500MHz like it should in 2D desktop mode.

You need to make a couple of profiles up in CCC and then edit the xml files it creates to force the correct core speeds.

See this thread

I have desktop and gaming profiles which I switch over when needed.

I run some fan profiles from RivaTuner and the card idles at the mid 60s before gaming and the mid 50s after gaming. Load temps are mid 80s.

I'd love to watercool it but it just doesn't seem worth it when I'll be getting a new card in six months, and the waterblock will then go to waste.

Its not about the fan....... There is a bug with all current ATI drivers that makes one GPU run at 3d speeds whilst idle after boot. If you start a 3d app and stop it the GPU in question will drop back to its proper idle speed and run much cooler.

You can either start a 3d app after boot and stop it, or create a profile and edit it to something other then the default idle speeds. The drivers will then load the last activated profile and nudge to the new idle speeds after a reboot making the card run much cooler, without having to do anything. If you only adjust the idle clocks the card will jump back up to 3d speeds automatically still.

My idle clocks are 300 mhz GPU and 300 mhz memory..... (Any less doesn't seem to work.)

Driverheaven has a good guide on how to manually edit profiles if you need it. Its fairly simple.
