ive had this xfx 4890 1gb for about 2 months max it always runs hot at 60degrees idle and has been crashing my full pc to the point of restarting and not booting back up again.
i.e. the fans and cpu fan spins and the card was displaying 3 red lights.
i know after some reading this signifies not enough power but my psu is a 550w thermaltake purepower rx with 41amps on the 12v rail.
now the machine now just reboots without any warning lights staying on and i can get to desktop. these reboots only happen when i'm playing 3d games.
like when i play ghostbusters as soon as i get to be able to control a charachter the machine reboots, this game played fine on my 8600gt. batman arkham asylum was the culprit of machine reboots and not getting to desktop but this game now plays fine. all other games seem ok too.

dud g-card? not trying to start a nvidia vs ati battle but i wish id stuck with nvidia as i cant get good resolutions in most of my games with this card too like call of juarez the max resolution i get is 1280x1024.

i'm annoyed with this card and am on the verge of sending it back. the card has never been overclocked and my sytem is stock speed also.

my system spces are:
intel e8400
4gb OCZ ddr 2 ram
gigabyte ga-g31m-s2l
1TB samsung spinpoint f1(sata)
thermaltake purepower rx 550w PSU
pioneer dvd-r(sata)
creative x-fi xtreme audio soundcard
XFX ati 4890 1gb
Win 7 x64

Sounds like a dodgy card, then again lack of resolutions sounds like a driver issue, did you remove all Nvidia drivers before installing the new ATI ones?

ive had a fresh install of win7 x64 about a month ago and updated graphics drivers yesterday, still the same.

Sounds liek it is a dodgy card.

Oh by the way, 60 degrees isn't that hot, it's a bit high but nothing substantial, unless you have the fan speed up higher than 30%, in which case yes it is.

Out of interest, is it the new brand XFX cards with the Zalman cooler, or the original one? If you RMA it you may get a nice new shiny custom cooled card.

My one goes works fine at temps as high 85C though usually sits about 75C so the temps are not the problem.

the PSU watts should be fine for the gfx, i run my Ati and PII 4 cores at 3300 mhz with a 480W for a month waiting for my RMA 700W.

So I guess the problem might be a faulty GFX or maybe drivers; have u tried different versions of drivers? I am still using the drivers from may as the newer ones crash COH.

Lucky for some ;) I have a crossfire setup and one of the cards hits 100 under load. I'm worried it will explode hehe.

One of the major problems with graphics cards in SLI/XFire is that one of the cards will nearly always be a lot hotter than the other, some motehrboards (Like my MSI GD70) has a bigger gap between them and gives a longer XFire bridge which gives a little more headroom between the intake and the other PCB.

Yeah. Plan B is to put the fan door back into my case and get some 12cm fans blowing at the buggers. Maybe also invest in some thermaltake T-Rad2's.

Running furmar (spelling?) my overclocked card reached 112C by Gpu-z but never crashed unless I push too far the overclock. Without overclock and just gaming, as I mention before it sits about 75C - 80C depending on the weather!

Could be the PSU. Thermaltake power supplies are notoriously bad excluding most of the Toughpower series which are right up there with Corsair (made by the same company even)

bios

well thankfully it would seem i had some bad bios settings,
loaded failsafe and set my other setting and all is hunkydory. @BIOS musto been using last known good.

this pc is a htpc/gamer in my main room so it possible the tv has been on channel1# while the pc has been running on the hdmi in the background and the bios has been altered accidently by the missus.

ive now set a bios password so this wont happen again and am in the process of ramping my cpu up. just testing after 24hrs on 3.1ghz now on 3.19ghz. and sure i'll get this to 3.6ghz with my new arctic 7 cooler.

the reason i was worried as its been said these TT PSU's may not be too great but it was new at time of buying the 4890. i spent very little on this PSU so was a little worried. any further issues i'll update this post.

thanks for the input guys
