Is it worth getting 8G of ram with a new Win7 64bit version? I have been told it likes to have 6Gb but I dunno if it is worth the extra cost or not? Am I likely to see any better performance with 8G over 4G? I will not be doing ****loads of video conversions etc. Mostly playing games.

Ill be using an I5 2500k a GTX 580 and a 120G SSD.

I switched to 8GB from4 GB, i have usually 3GB free with 2GB+ 'reserved'. PhotoShop is super fast, but i don't do all that much on it tbh.
I also don't have any swap file :)

Depends if you need it or not. I have 4gb and my system runs lovely. I have W7 Pro 64bit.

I've only hit the page file once when gaming, that was in Crysis on a particularly RAM thirsty level.

8GB is probably a bit overkill for gaming, especially if it means buying a 64bit OS aswell. what do you have free whilst not doing anything, and then how much is free whilst running your normal games. if there is still some free then no need to upgrade, if you find things are taking a long time to load and the amount of free ram is only say 200MB or so, then maybe its worth looking at.

I recently went from 4GB to 8GB but I use Photoshop, Premiere, & Flash quite a bit and it makes a big difference to these but not anything else. I couldn't notice any difference when gaming though I only tried on the Crysis 2 demo.

I don't think I have ever seen my system use over 2.5GB. I don't use intensive applications like photoshop though.

I used to have 4GB of RAM. Bought another 4GB of the same type just to see if it improved performance. So far, in the last 2 years, it has made no difference whatsoever.

i have 4GB and i usually use only about 2.5-3GB of that, so i wouldnt bother with 8gb, seems like overkill and i;d rather spend money on other components :)

I went from 4 to 8 last week and I've not noticed much, if any difference. I guess its like everyone else has been saying, if your only gaming there isn't huge point...... Still cool though ;)

I think 6 Gb would be the sweet spot, But i do beleive you need triple channel for that, Unless like the others said you do video stuff.

but what you are all missing is, RAM is cheap, WINDOWS 7 64BIT is not. so for the amount it would cost for them to go from 4GB-8GB will be £100-£150, is that a cost effective way to gain no extra performance in games?

i got windows 7 64 bit with my retail version of windows 7, you get both discs, therefore costing me nothing extra.

also why would anyone nowadays buy 32 bit OS? all hardware supports 64 bit and 64 bit can do everything 32 bit does plus more.

i was refering to the OP, as that is what this thread is for surely? and he implies he would have to BUY windows 7 64bit. a lot of people get the oem versions as its cheaper, just because you didnt, does not mean everyone is in the same boat.
so my point was, from what the OP said, it would be a very expensive upgrade for little or no gains.

I read it that the OP was buying Win 7 64 bit and was it worthing having 8GB.

Is it worth getting 8G of ram with a new Win7 64bit version?

Perhaps OP can clarify?

Ok, I was a wee bit ambiguous in my first post. I should have said "8G of ram TO USE with Windows 7."
I HAVE an unopened copy of Windows 7. I bought it ages ago for less than £50 when it first came out. I have never needed it til now but, as I am buying a new, up to date system, I will be installing it on that.

Besides, it is a moot point as I thought sod it, might as well be as futureproof as possible. Got OC to upgrade from 4G to 8G with same type of memory, (corsair vengeance 12800c8) it cost the grand total of £24! Daft not to at that price!
