I'm looking to 'upgrade' my monitor to better suit gaming, but as a video professional I also need 4K... and that's where it gets slim pickings.

Why are there so few 4K 144+Hz monitors? Most on OcUK are either not out yet or out of stock - on 43" is in stock but that's way too big - which doesn't allow for much choice over size/design/other features. They're also very expensive compared to non-4K or non-144Hz versions.

Is there a reason these panels aren't that common and most gamers have 1440 panels etc?

The simple answer is high refresh rate 1440p panels have been around much longer so are in better supply than high refresh rate 4K panels which are still relativly new, specifically ones with HDMI 2.1 support.

The market went super/ultra wide, sadly, so there seems to be a smaller demand for large format 16:9.

Still using my 5.5 year old Dell S2716DG and forever waiting for a decent 4K 144Hz monitor that isn't £LOL.

Welcome to the queue.

I've been waiting for like two years, courtesy of 16:10 having been raped to 16:9 and 2560x1440 being downgrade.
And looks like wait will continue past current monitor's 8 year age...

LG's 27GP950 has good modern response times and very well tuned overdrive.
But at least part of them have black screen issues.
Also from my pov gamut (lacking in AdobeRGB coverage) would be downgrade and same for 27" being just mediocre size needing shortening viewing distance.
Anyway availability is at "Hopefully few demo samples arriving to Finland for Christmas" level.

In 28" size we have few models all based on Innolux panel.
Whose wide gamut is half assed and would call it at most as semi wide.
Also while at full Hz response time is really good that's based on borderlining too agressive overdrive and any drop in input Hz starts pushing oveshoot into more and more transitions.

In 32" size best availability having models are based on another Innolux panel, with mostly same issues.
Neither is HDMI 2.1 of those 28"/32"Innolux panels using Gigabytes real, but half assed marketroid scam limited to basically half of HDMI 2.1 standard's real bandwidth.

Then we have few published but not really available 32" models like Asus PG32UQ, MSI MPG321UR-QD and Viewsonic XG320U.
AU Optronics panel used in them has AdobeRGB covering gamut.
Unfortunately response times are at last gen of last gen level and mediocre at best.
Asus might have basically even cancelled/put release of PG32UQ on hold outside China to wait for improved panel.

(there's also Chinese review of Viewsonic)

Also there should be 576 segment FALD backlight panel coming to above panel of those monitors... And below one in super expensive PG32UQX with even slightly worser response times and serious blooming issues no doubt caused by insanely high brightness.

Acer has already announced model with that panel

And there's also 27" model announced by Acer with similar specs, but smaller panel.

42” LG OLED next year will be the answer I think. Will have much better image quality than any monitor and proper HDR. Grab it from John Lewis with 5 years warranty that covers burn in and you are golden. Can see them hitting £800 by next Black Friday.

Alright, it's an inch out :p but OP isn't alone, it's still too big for many if not most people's desk setup/environment.

True. I measured my desk and 42” would be perfect. Was thinking about the current 48” version but the only way that would work is if I wall mounted it where as the 42” fits no issues whatsoever. Also my understanding is the 42” one might be built in one of their newer fabs with newer tech that could help with burn in and longevity.

Yeah, I tried a 43" at the same time as my current 38" ultrawide and I had a sore neck after a few hours of working on it. Give me a 34"-38" ultrawide OLED and I'll happily sell a kidney :p

That’s not what she said :p
