4k at medium settings vs 1400p at ultra?

So,its as the title says basically,I'm looking at 4k monitors. I have a 1400p monitor now and my TX manages just fine but cant afford to add a second if I upgrade. Would 4k with settings knocked down a bit look better than 1400p with everything turned up? Im aware AA isnt as important at the higher resolutions but still...

very interested to hear what you think on this :)
 
personally i think 4k makes games look worse, but you can see all the textures that clearly weren't made for 4k. also i think you still need aa. not sure why most people think it magically gets rid of those stepped lines.
 
A toughie and I have been 4K, loved it and then went back to 1440P and loved it (because of the G-Sync and picture clarity) but something about 4K still has me wanting to go back. If you do go 4K, I am interested in your thoughts on it bud :)
 
I'd personally go 1440p at ultra compared to 4K at medium in most games, you could try using DSR to 4K to see roughly what the experience would be like.

It doesnt look as good as native 1440p but i find doing it on my 4k monitor works well in cases such as witcher 3 and it still looks great. 1440p downscaled still looks better than 108p downscaled on a 4k monitor even though 1080p is 1:1 pixel mapping.
 
^^ Until you look at text though its often a little softened text downscaled to 1080 on a good scaler has uniform line sizes while 1440 doesn't.
 
I had 4K@60hz, 1440p@60hz and 1440p@144hz running side by side (by side) and decided to keep the 1440@144hz

4K was impressive on the few games kinda made for it, but it just didn't wow me like the motion clarity of 144hz did this time round (I previously tested 1080p@144hz and 1440p@60hz and went with the 1440)

for how things are now, 1440@27inches is a sweet spot, to really get the most out of 4K I think it needs to be smoother and bigger, at 27-28inches you just can't really get that much of an improvement unless you have the screen inches from your face - at 30cm the difference isn't really appreciable
 
OP save your money and keep the 1440p monitor.

Even if 4K on medium settings was a tiny bit better it is not enough to justify spending a lot of money for.

I think 32" for 4k is the bare minimum.
 
I'm upgrading anyways but it was either 4k or 1400p with gsync. Oh, and the third option was the dell 34 inch ultra wide which is kind of 3.5k I think. I want gsync the most but that ultra wide is sexy as hell
 
I have IIyama B2888UHSU,and the Asus Rog Swift side by side.... 4K all the way,thats my personal taste.I play a lot GTAV,but even 1440p with 8XMSAA not so sharp like 4K on same screen size.

I disagree, the image quality(to me at least) is way superior 4k @ 28" vs 1440p @ 27" - For the OP though I would still recommend 1440 at Ultra if the alternative is turning down settings. 4K is just too many darn pixels to push :p
