4K - It's time

If the Amp does not support 4k, why not connect the PC to a HDMI switch so you can choose between the TV or Monitor, sound will have to run separate to the AMP either standard phono connectors or digital (coax or optical). The other gadgets like Sky dont support 4k anyway (well, your bluray player may) so they can connect to the Amp as usual but only output 1080.

Q though...would you see the benefits of 4K in a game on the TV at the distance you view it from? On the Monitor yes but the distance to the sofa, wouldnt a downsampled 4k image or even 1080 be enough?

As someone else has said, this is easily sorted:
DP from gpu to new hi res monitor 1440p (which will be fine with your card), then hdmi into the amp. You could then set audio output via the hdmi so you still get audio no matter which display you're using. Job done. Then eventually you upgrade your amp and tv and the same solution works.

My trusty 50" plasma is on it's last legs, I've been hovering over the 4K land for a while, wondering, questioning, wishing... It's time :(

I don't want to let my plasma go, it's just so pretty!!!! But, alas! 1080p has been fun and glorious. But it's time to move on.

So, price being no factor. I have some questions:

1) I don't want to go SLI with my 980 ti. Whilst I know it CAN handle the full 4k res, I know it won't be great. Can you scale down the res to a lower resolution on a 4K monitor/TV? Or is it 4K or go away sort of stuff?

2) PC monitors, same as above, at the moment, I'm on a 24" 1080p. Now, the way my home cinema setup is, I can't upgrade one or the other. It HAS to be both, hence the hold on to my 1080p plasma for so long. Are they any good at the moment? What's the general size of a 4K monitor?

3) Those that have made the jump, is it worth it? Or should I try and hold onto my loved plasma for another year or 2?

Honestly, if I knew what I know now and was in your position and wanted to experience 4K, I'd just buy the monitor in my signature. You can only use a Display Port for 60hz, so run one cable from your monitor into your Video Card Display Port and leave the HDMI as it is.

You will use your desk more often, and you'll love it :)

Wow, excellent, thanks guys! 1440p monitor it is!

Is Steam really that smart? What about games running from uPlay and stuff?

How do I 'inform' games to run on one monitor and not the other?

Older games run on the primary monitor.

A lot of newer games let you chose which display to use.

Uplay - That's one of the rare occasions where you do have to change the primary monitor manually.

Steam big picture mode simply automates the process of making your TV the primary monitor, until you exit and it switches back

Aces, so it's not that much that I'll be faffing around with display settings.

SOOOOOOOOOO, who fancies pointing me in the right direction of a decent 27+" IPS with 1440p?

Are you having a laugh? You have a card that can handle 4K(which was the whole point of the thread), not sure what brand, but it could easily be upgraded to Sli in the future, and you're looking at 1440p monitors? Future proof mean anything to you? 4K isn't 2 years away, it's now and if you can afford it come on board. Just about completed Tomb Raider in 4K Ultimate settings, smooth as a babies ass and the best gaming experience I've ever had on the PC. Your card could handle that, and that's just for starters.

At least buy a 4K G-Sync monitor(if your going to pay £300+ for a 1440p), and use that at 1440p. Read up on G-Sync.

The monitor in my signature is about £500, and it will fit on your desk, if you decide to buy anything. G-Sync is like adding 20FPS to your card and removing tearing/stuttering.

You have NVidia, I wouldn't touch a non G-Sync monitor now.

G-Sync is mostly pointless really. As I game about 85% on my plasma... So I'd rather get a nice IPS panel than worry about GSync. In fact, I'd say it's closer to 90%.

I don't believe that a single 980Ti can do Tomb Raider on max settings at 4k and have it 'smooth as a babies ass'(60fps+ in my book). I'm guessing you'd still be in the 40fps range on average.

Some people have higher standards for performance, so for us, 4k is not now.

I've been playing PC games since 1991, I know .what's hot and what's not, my 980ti plays this easily @ 60FPS without breaking a sweat. All I can say is that there's a lot of mediocre 980ti's out there, and G-Sync is the best piece of tech I've used, monitor wise, possibly ever. I do wish it was a curved screen however, as I miss my old 1080p curved look.

So to the OP, I recommend a Curved monitor if you want to stay at 2K.

I'm sorry but you are talking rubbish a bit there.

Maybe it's because you have G-sync you don't actually know what the FPS is, and it doesn't matter so much with G-sync as that's the whole point of it really.

But the highest '1 GPU' benchmark in Tomb Raider at Ultra 4k ("max settings") is here and it's a highly clocked Titan X averaging 26.5 fps.

Just because I'm sick of you timewasters and jealous twits I decided to install FRAPS, and it is a solid 60 fps I'm getting. Now hurry along the benchmarks and update them.

Now I can uninstall FRAPS and play in peace, hopefully I won't get a reply to this because I'm sick of your accusations and nonsense.

Oh, the temp of my card was 53C at full load too.

Why would I be Jealous? I have two Titan X's.

It doesn't man. You're either not playing at max settings(even then I'd still question it) or you're just straight up lying.

Looked up a benchmark of a Fury X at max settings and 4k it's barely managing to average over 30fps. I don't know where your card is finding another 30 on top of that.

The fact that you didn't even FRAPS installed at all is kind of a giveaway you're not exactly that in tune with the performance you get in your games.

Also, I wouldn't count 4xSSAA as part of the 'max' settings setup. That basically is like running it at 4k in the first place.
