Hi guys,

I'm thinking of buying this 4k monitor;

http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z...ng-LU28E590DSXY-28-UHD-3840x2160-1MS-Response

Not a competitor as OCUK don't trade in NZ as far as I know.

Three questions if I may.

1. I have a 980GTX and this monitor as Free Sync, does it work with each other?

2. Is this a good monitor for a low level enthusiast that don't agonize over every pixel?

3. While I expect to play some games at 4k, I don't expect to play the very latest titles at 4k. When I drop the resolution back to 1080p, does it look any different from what you would get on a normal 1080p-only monitor?

many thanks

I have the old, non-Freesync, version of that monitor, the one that was launched almost 2 years ago. It does not have HDMI v2, but runs 4K just fine through the Displayport. Freesync will not work with Nvidia GPUs - you need GSync for that. Yes, it's a decent monitor and games look just fine at 1080p. You may notice that the 2x2 pixel blocks are big enough to notice.

Don't get a 4K monitor just for the sake of it. A 980GTX will really struggle at 4K and 1080p will look really soft at that size. I had the non-freesync version of that monitor and the motion blur was pretty awful (despite it claiming to be a 1ms response).

My advice would be to save up for a GPU upgrade and see what monitors are available later.
Having switched to higher refresh rate monitors, I couldn't now go back to a 60hz one.

That's odd. I don't see motion blur on mine, and I was playing older games just fine on it with my GTX 780 Ti.

I've just checked and my monitor is the Samsung U28D590, and I ordered it in March 2014.

Is that gaming in 4K with the 780 Ti?

I absolutely don't expect to play the new Tomb Raider in 4k but older games should be fine. I have a 4k TV and hooked it up to the PC before and most games ran fine. I was just worried about dropping it back to 1080p and it looking weird or 'soft' as another poster mentioned.

I tend to keep my monitors forever but alternate my graphics cards between NVIDIA and AMD, so next up is AMD which should help with the Free Sync.

Its a 60hz monitor, of course it has motion blur.
Go to the blur busters site and use the street map demo, without low persistence (strobing back light) you wont be able to read the street names, that's motion blur.

Currently I have the world's cheapest 1080p AOC monitor and see no input lag or ghosting. As I said in the OP post, I don't worry too much about niggling little things. As long as it's not very noticeable.
