4k Question..

Yeah Planet Earth 2 is really impressive. Usually the HDR is what really pops instead of resolution, but for some reason the resolution is more noticable in that then in many 4k movies.

Probably because
A) Landscapes/close-ups of animals/slo-mo
B) It was filmed and mastered in 4k - some 4K Blu-rays are sourced from 2k digital intermediates.

I went from a 42'' HD tv to a 50'' 4k HDR
SD has become almost unwatchable, like watching an illegal stream.
HD is generally fine.
4k is sharp as ****

The reason 4k is more noticeable in that than film is because they're not messing it with. Films are shaped by the directors artistic vision, so that means shifted colour gamut, appropriate levels of film grain for texture and so on. A documentary like Planet Earth 2 is being mastered with the intention of conveying the content in a pure a way as possible, devoid of tampering.

Hopefully planet Earth 3 gets a decent frame rate though, if you look at some of the utube 4k 60fps stuff it really benfit animal movement (... as we discussed before)
Netflix our planet should fix this

In some poorer East European countries they ditch the Full HD channels and replace them with SD variants. The World Cup isn't broadcast in HD by their largest provider of TV services.
Pure greed to profit more money, to torture people more and ultimately, in the future to destroy entire countries. They are slowly killing the population there.

HD channels can be viewed on SD CRTs, by the way.

Wow so SD television is directly linked to a nations depression, destruction of countries and ultimitaley death of its inhabitants.

I would love to read the source confirming this, could you post some links?

Is that fairly typical when watching SD on a 4k TV or are some better than others when displaying the picture..?
A lot of what we watch is still in SD and our GT50 Plasma produces as good a picture as you would expect.

Well, the reviews for my tv said it was one of the better ones at upscaling SD so god knows how bad some must be.
I can't imagine how bad it must be watching SD on something like a 65"

I'm not sure about that particular set, but my LG OLED looks fantastic with 1080p content, 2160p does look better and sharper but 1080p doesn't look far off.

SD content looks awful, but I do sit very close to a 65" so it's always going to.

mmmmm Not looking at TV's for a while and I must have missed what others have already noted and posted about.

A lot of our content and watching is still done with SD content, Freeview and Freesat and others, and, like I noted, the Plasma does a great job at upscaling that to 1080p.

Didn't know about 4k and potential (real) upscaling SD content issues, ah well the Panasonic Plasma lives for a while longer.

My wallet salutes you.

I've just bought this 50" Panasonic 4k. SD content is definitely noticeable, but a long way from unwatchable imo.

Thanks for that, noted the TV. :)

Are you happy overall with that TV and 4k content etc....?

I think that I'll have to pop down to Currys with a stick full of SD content, I hadn't really considered SD being a potential issue with a 4k TV. There are enough other things to consider, formats, stds etc etc etc, without that as well...!

I'll also try it on our Sons TV when we visit him next week, he has a 4k TV.

I had been thinking about this one....

I have often read that about Sony and their Android OS.
Does that slowness also mean that the UI in general is slow, thinking more of the TV guide and day to day functions rather than the settings etc....?

Does the Sony also get regular or at least recent updates...?

I haven't actually tried any real 4k content only upscaled so far. 1080P content looks great even when set to upscale by the TV, rather than direct 1x1->2x2 resizing.

Actually more blown away by the HDR (despite it being a "low end" HDR TV), Uncharted 4 on the PS4 looks amazing.

Watched Pacific Rim on DVD at the weekend, and honestly between the Bluray player (Sony BDP-S370) upscaling to 1080P, and the TV then upscaling to 4k, the image was still very good, and would be hard pressed to say it was definitely SD Content. On top of that this is the first TV I've had, where dark scenes can be viewed as intended - the blacks are black, but there is no loss of detail, still easy to see what is going on.

Thanks, I was hoping that things might have improved, with the general speed and responsiveness of the UI.

choices, choices and compromise - not much changes.

My wallet salutes you as well.

re-posting earlier article on sony/cpu gpus ..but I prefer if they are spending money on the panel and the piccture, which are more important.
...
Sony 2017 and early 2018 models are still based on the MT5891 (2nd generation platform) from early 2016. Performance therefore still leaves to be desired. Sony currently does not deploy MediaTek’s 3rd (MT5597) or 4th (MT5598) generation Android TV SoC. Probably not worth the effort anyway as the CPU didn’t receive a major upgrade, GPU has even been downgraded to an OpenGL ES 2.0 compliant Mali 450 from 2012! The main goal of MediaTek’s Android TV SoC line-up is clearly cost effectiveness. There is nothing premium about it which Sony claims their products to be.

on a panasonic tv the inbuilt tuner and decoder produce much better 1080 picture on low bitrate sd freeview streams than external humax stb decoding/upscaling to 1080,
which is down to mpeg noise reduction as well as up-scaling.

Thanks for noting that. What you have written about the Panasonic TV's does that generally apply to all of their models, in respect of the quality of their up-scaling....?

I'd suggest watching BBC1 local news as that's in SD or Quest if you have it.
Both these channels will give you a good idea of what to expect from SD on a big 4k screen
