Hi all,

I have a 70 inch KU6000 and Plex media running on my PC (specs below). TV also is using a Denon 2300 amp with Q7000i speaker setup. I have some 4K movies on my PC and was wondering whether 4K streaming will work via plex. Both are ether net wired over Gigabit so hopefully network shouldn't be an issue

Has anyone had any experience using Plex 4K to a TV?

Thanks

I've streamed 4K content to my LG B6 OLED. I used an app called "Xplay" which is basically Plex with a few tweaks, main thing is that it doesn't require a transcode. I've got it connected via wirless .ac and it plays no problem.

Why can't you just try streaming the 4k files and see if it works?

Personally I use Twonky, and while it's more more simplistic in interface it streams everything I need to my Samsung TV with no issues.

You shouldn't have any issues using PLEX there if it's transcoding on the PC and a wired LAN.

Thanks for the replies all

I am trying to play The Hateful Eight at the moment, however I get a "There was a problem playing this item" error on this

For now this is the only 4K movie I have

It will not play on the TV or my PC

Any ideas?

On recent handbrake 1.0+ builds, it has template options for 1080p android.
I've encoded using the preset and my TV plex client direct plays the file, rather than forcing my anaemic HP Microserver N40L trying to transcode (which fails with a similar error to yours).

I have no idea if it will work, but couldn't you use settings similar to the 1080p@30 android preset and then change the res up to 4k?

I realise a newer codec would be more efficient, but I believe lack of support for the codec on the client is what is causing the playback issues.

I got it working however

I did not have enough space on the SSD for the transcoding so I switched transcoding drive to my HDD and now it is working perfectly on both the KU6000 70 inch

However we also have an ethernet wired 40 inch KU6000 in the kitchen but it comes up with the same error still

:(

Did you rip the 4K disc?

If so how?

I ask because I'm looking to set up my own Plex server soon, I have a 4K disc to rip but I can't do it, driving me mad!

Using Nero by the way

Interested in this too. I believe makeMKV can do most BluRay's but I'm unaware of a reliable wayto rip UHD blu Ray, though at around £25 a disc (and without a reader) I'm unlikely to buy one short term.

What format is it? It needs to be .mkv

Do these 4K ripping methods strip out all the HDCP malarkey or do the TV apps just bypass it?

If the only easy way to play a 4K rip on a HDCP 2.2 screen is to use an inbuilt app, does this mean HD audio is necessary sacrificed, as ARC or optical will be needed to supply the amp?

I use the ARC on my TV, seems to process pretty much all the formats. More info here. I was going to purchase a 4K amp so I can enjoy the full range of audio and 4k from the PC but I cant' be bothered. I worked out I would need to spend £100 on a GPU and £350 on an amp just to be able to get everything up to 4K HDR spec. I'm happy using in inbuilt XPlay (Plex) app. I spent the £450 on some B&W headphones, much better use!

Could be wrong here but 1. ARC doesn't currently support HD audio formats (DTS-HD, Dolby True HD, Dolby Atmos) and 2. a 4K amp wouldn't have helped because no PC GPU passes HDCP-protected files yet so the handshake between PC and amp would have failed.

Understand what you're saying about money better placed elsewhere and totally agree, but for my own benefit I'd like to confirm my understanding anyway.

I have lots of UHD backups with HD audio that play fine over HDMI from my PC.

Arc doesn't support those audio types? :S that is going to be a problem. Might have to change to optical

What??? So there is no way to get audio from TV via plex, Amazon prime, Netflix or whatever to the amp whilst keeping DTS/Dolby?
