Inspired by the 20pin v 24pin thread, I have an 8 pin connector on my new mobo (with a cap over 4 pins so you can use either a 4 pin ATX 12v connector or an 8 pin EPS 12v and I have both 4 pin and 8 pin power cables on my PSU.

So, which is 'better'? I presume more power is available from the 8 pin, so is it just safer to use it long term?

CPU is Q6600.

Cheers.

Well it's there to supply extra power to the CPU, and since you have a quad it would be advisable to use the 8 pin since it's available to you.

when i changed to a quad i had problems, glad i changed the psu too as my old ocz only had a 4pin and the p5b has an 8 pin socket. at the start i only connected one of the 4 pin cables and had problems, BSODs and boot errors.

if you have 2x4 pins then use them imo.

I have the 8-pin connected from my Enermax Infiniti....but noticed that the shapes on the 2 four pin plugs do not really correspond to the motherboard socket (Maximus Formula) - although the plug still fits the socket snugly and with no issue.....am I alone here ? Seems odd that there would be such variance
