Hi

Samsung HT-C450 5.1 ch - 500W

I have this and a PS4 Slim (which does not have optical out)

Now the problem;

The PS4 only has HDMI out but the bluray only has one HDMI out also. All i want and need to do is to find a way with your help to use the suround sound with the PS4.

Please can you help.

From a quick Google I can see the C450 has optical in, but the PS4 doesn't have optical out. Your best bet may be to use an optical cable from the TV to the optical in on the C450. Some TV sets won't output 5.1 over optical, so it may depend on your TV.

An audio de-embedder will do the trick. The HDMI passes through it via the HDMI IN and OUT sockets, and along the way it decodes and separates the 5.1 digital audio to provide (in this case) and optical output.

If you're not 4K gaming then a cheap 1080p one from the rain forest or something similar will be fine. This one is £13.00 + cables: "HDMI Audio Converter HDMI to HDMI + Optical SPDIF/ Toslink RCA L/R Audio Extractor-HD Digital to Analog Converter DAC HDMI Video Adapter up to 1080P for PS3 PS4 Blu-ray DVD Player Xbox One SKY HD Box"

However, if you need the 4K signal on the TV then it'll cost you a bit more. This Lindy version is £50 + cables https://www.lindy.co.uk/audio-video...05/hdmi-4k-audio-extractor-de-embedder-p10032

The one for 13 looks perfect but am I missing something about how it works?

The blu ray player has just one hdmi out not two but on their image of the item it goes from tv to blu ray and boy day to the box

You're currently connecting the PS4 slim to the TV with one HDMI cable.

You purchase one extra HDMI cable. You plug from PS4 Slim HDMI OUT to the de-embedder HDMI IN. That's one HDMI cable.
Next, you take the second HDMI cable and connect from the de-embedder HDMI OUT to the TV HDMI IN.

The whole chain looks like this: PS4 HDMI Out > de-embedder > TV.
In effect then, the de-embedder is sitting in the middle of the cable run from the PS4 Slim to the TV. Do you get it now?

You also need to purchase one optical cable. This connects from de-embedder Optical out to Samsung Optical in. Et voila! HDMI to the TV< and Optical to the sound system.

Efharisto para poli :)

So to confirm, this is the exact same item i need correct? - https://www.hellasdigital.gr/tv-and...-a3-adapter-hdmi-in-hdmi-out-rca-and-toslink/

thanks for all the help
Yeah, looks like the same unit but a different brand. That's not surprising. A lot of this stuff comes out of the same factory and is just badged up for different markets, or just different brands for the hell of it.

If you have chance to check with your supplier (Athens? / Crete?) to confirm, but as far as I can tell from the specs of the rain forest one it'll pass Bitstream audio which means DD and DTS.

You might want to have a look at the Samsung when you get the de-embedder and check it does DD/DTS for the Optical input as well as off disc. I suspect it will but can't be 100% positive as it's not explicitly stated in the manual. ProLogic II is mention though. My guess is that DD and DTS will be auto-detected, whereas DPL II is an optional choice between that and Samsung's own EQ or plain stereo playback.

Edit: re older PS4. Yeah, you're right. It wouldn't make a difference.

Optical maxes out at DD/DTS so for HD Audio you need HDMI out going direct to an AV receiver so it can get the higher data-rate signals for Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio. That also means that the Samsung is incapable of decoding HD audio. It needs a whole gear change.

I'm not a gamer so forgive me if if I'm a little behind on the latest games, but The Last of Us Remastered and Battle Front 4 are reputed to be very good for sound and they make use of HD audio too. Drive Club is also mentions. When you're ready to make the move to a full HD-audio decoding AV system then they'll be some games to start with as tests.

@hornetstinger - While your comments are valid re a used AV receiver and HD Audio etc it's not always the case that the enquirer is looking for that type of solution.

In this situation it sounds like this might be a second property, so the requirement is just to get something working with the gear already on-site. There may be other factors we're not privy to as well.

As for losing HD audio, my guess is that if the PS4 was playing through the projector- or TV- speakers then @chris_r never had HD audio to begin with. Gaining the use of the surround system and DD & DTS will be a big step up for a relatively small outlay. That's a good day's work in my book. Maybe some time in the future it'll be the right time to pull out the Samsung and replace it with a proper AV receiver / speaker combo, but that day is not today. :)

Thanks for all the help, i appreciate it. I will go ahead and order and report back.

I am going from standard 2.1 audio to this so as long as i get good volume, nice bass and better audio all around i am happy. I am no audio phile i just wanted surround sound :-)

Hi all,

I got it, the sound is incredible! amazing......then i plugged my PJ HDMI in, then later back to watching the TV as normal.

Now, i am trying to set it up again, all lights are on the box, followed the instructions again but i am getting no signal on the TV, no sound from the box, nothing just lights on the new box.

Ideas?

Hi chris_r, glad stage 1 worked well. Not so pleased about the problems for you reconnecting. This could be a HDMI handshake issue.

HDMI does a communication thing between various devices. Try rebooting all the gear after making a change or reconnection. Let us know how you get on.
