£5,800 repair bill from thrifty

Say you want three independent quotes and will also pay once the repair receipts are shown. Just like any insurance company would do. They don't go round paying theoretical costs.

Bet they have made up the costs and will get it repaired on the cheap. Thrifty aren't paying the OEMs to repair vehicles.

Hopefully not too much of a tangent. Regardless of excess, multiple quotes etc how can one ensure in these situations they're only charged *if* the work is done? I've had places conjure up costs for minor damage that I'm sure they didn't fix or would've fixed as part of a larger job. I use insurance4carhire now so don't need to worry but not always applicable, e.g. here for corporate use iirc.

The check in report shows ;

Door front offside - door handle light scratch/scuff over 100mm
bumper rear - lower skirt dent 31mm - 100mm
bumper front - bumper front dent 31mm - 100mm
wheel front nearside - deep scratch/scuff under 20mm
bumper front sump guard - damaged.

4 months later we get a repairable report from an assessor showing a bill of £4,900 + VAT (Labour £1,326, Parts £1,798, Materials £1,720) sent from thrifty.

Not only this but the car has done 1700 more miles since it was collected from us, so its clear that its been rented out again which could have occurred more damage.

The report also shows the Pedestrian Protection System as having a fault, but no mention of this fault being on when it was collected from us?

The photographs from the assessor also shows the grille removed and signs of other damage.

That amount of damage could easily add up to 5k+ using new OEM parts and main dealer to do the work.

Give the bill to the idiot who caused the damage and tell him to sort it out. 'Cracked sump' lol, what did he do, take it off roading or something.

It sounds like your company hired the car from Thrifty. So consumer law won't apply. It comes down to the contract agreed between your two companies. Does that contract make provision for challenging any repair costs? If it doesn't then it's probably a matter for your legal department / engage a solicitor, although that might just push costs even higher and not be worth it.

Usually the damage excess for car hire firms like Thrifty is limited to 1000-2500 if any damage is caused, do you have the rental agreement detailing what the liabilities are for damage? It should clearly be written in the terms and conditions of the rental agreement.

If it's a company doing the hiring then they maybe self insure to reduce the rates further instead of the 'basic insurance' normally offered with a excess of maybe £900. Guess the fleet have worked out if they are hiring X number of cars it's cheaper to save £X per day and pay out the odd big claim.

The guy could also have used it outwith the agreed usage (eg, off road) and invalidated any insurance rendering the company liable for the lot.

I assume their own insurance kicks in when it goes above a certain point
Don't forget their business is renting out cars, if you return a knackered one they have to get it fixed and whilst thats happening they are not able to run their business in regards that vehicle, as such they will want it dealt with pretty quickly

I am with the others though how did someone manage all that damage its seems pretty unreasonable and hence its quite possible the clause in regards limited damage total is rendered null by another part of the contract if for example the person has not taken due care, and they assume this damage is not due care?

What's not clear from your post is whether the damage was caused by the ex-employee, or if the damage has been caused after return. Surely you would have had something to confirm the state/condition of the vehicle when it was returned to Thrifty? Do you have any evidence whatsoever of the condition of the vehicle at the point of return?
