5 a day

In fact if I had my way there wouldn't be an NHS and you'd pay for your own damn healthcare like in America... I'm sick of using my hard earned to support drug addicts, chain smokers, alcoholics, daredevils, and people who don't look after themselves.

The US healthcare system is hardly a good model. They spend almost as much as a percentage of GDP on healthcare as us (15% and 17% respectively) and yet people still have to pay huge hospital bills, and people say the NHS is inefficient

I don't drink, I don't smoke so I eat what I want. No big brother government is going to dictate to me what I put into my body.

If I want to have steak and chips with the steak fat poured over chips I will. The same goes for if I want to have salad in pita bread I will. What I eat is up to me and not some nosey PC government department.

Christ, i really despair at some of the crap that gets spouted around these forums. Who exactly is forcing you to eat 5 portions of fruit & veg per day? It's simply government backed advice that will lead to a greater quality and length of life and it's completely up to you whether or not you choose to follow that advice. And what the hell has the phrase 'big brother government' got to do with anything? Sure i'd agree with that phrasing in a thread about compulsory ID cards but i can assure you the government isn't setting up any special cctv systems to make sure you're eating healthy food.

Fair enough I just don't think people who choose to eat bad diets should be entitled to NHS healthcare (Along with those who smoke and drink excessively).

This in 99% of cases i would quite strongly disagree with that comment but that's for another thread :)

A lot of replies in this thread have been along the lines of 'i only eat a few bits of fruit a week but I'm perfectly healthy'. That's not entirely the point. If you start eating 5 pieces of fruit and veg per day and drink 2l+ of water per day i can assure you, you will feel much better for it. I would certainly recommend it. You'll have more energy, you'll digest food much faster (although i will admit things can get a bit smelly!) and as someone mentioned before you will get ill far far less frequently.

For those that don't eat your 5-a-day i suggest you make an effort for just 2 weeks and i can almost guarentee you'll notice a change for the better :)

i drink water like a fish, going through usually 2L a day at work alone and more at home in the evenings. my food isnt as great though, i just try to vary it, not always healthy, not always bad ... admittedly more often bad than healthy.

you do not need to drink 2 litres of water a day, it amazing how many people think this. Its probably less healthy to actually do this.
Remember all the food we eat contains a lot of water.

you oviously know nothing.

You'll feel Grrrrr-eat?

rofl davey :P

i have a banana and an apple each day (or a banana and a fruit salad), i have another banana in my PWO shake 4 times a week.

generally have plenty of lettuce and cucumber in any rolls or pasta salads i have (quite often) and atleast 300ml of orange juice a day.

I go through stages of eating easily 5 a day but it only takes one take away to knock me down to 2-3a day for a few weeks

Easily manage it every day. Todays count was 6.5

Portions are often smaller than you think too especially if you eat fresh. Clicky

geez, that puts me at near 6 or 7!

never have small or medium bananas or apples to start with!

There was another post commenting on how wrong i was as well, but i think you'll find we are recommended to have an intake of about 2.5 litres a day (source: British Dietetic Association). I think you'll also find that most of what you eat and drink has quite a high percentage of water.
People who are drinking 2 litres+ of water a day are more than likely drinking too much water - which can be harmful.

There are plenty if you want to google it, this is the second one that came up and seems fairly informative.

Everyone is different, i never said it was bad for you, just that it could be. I drink lots of water everyday myself, and thats because I'm thirsty. It becomes a problem when you are consciously trying to drink too much water.

Anyway, I'm no expert, i was just having a conversation with my auntie about it who is a diabetic nurse. She mentioned it was one reason why a lot of her patients were feeling unwell, too much intake of water due to all the myths floating around about water intake.

I easily have more than 5 per day With my daughter being veggie every weekday evening meal is vegetarian but I mainly eat meat at lunch times.

I couldn't drink 2.5l of water a day though, red wine on the other hand :p

You don't say.

Honestly dude, drinking 2 litres of water per day is not bad for you. For you to over-drink with water, you need to drink a lot. We're talking serious amounts, like 6-7 litres each day to start affecting your health. I'm no expert either, but the stuff you've said is untrue. There is indeed moisture in food, but not in the quantities you're imagining.

sorry, i didn't mean to imply there were any serious health risks from drinking 2 litres of water a day. Just that it was a myth that is was necessary to drink that much, and it doesn't offer any health benefits. Besides, drinking 2 litres plus on top of other liquid and food every day could cause problems depending on your lifestyle.
