5 Monitor Flight Simulator

updated my post. the graphics card comes with a HDMI to DVI adapter, which solves that little issue.

however, it also says: Additional monitors can be added to the setup, but must be DisplayPort connected.

does this mean it has to be active or passive adapters?

*edit*
well i'll be damned, the active displayport adapters that OcUK do go from displayport to VGA:

aaaaaand that means i'd need a mini displayport to displayport adapter. grr!

It's because the DVI sockets usually are facing the floor not out the back towards the wall if that makes sense. You'll probably fit the adapter in fine on the monitor but struggle to line the cable up with it as the design of the monitors case will hamper it.

To be fair surveyor we need the OP to come back. He wanted to know if 5 screens was possible....which it is. I have shown a couple of demo rigs so he has an idea of what setup he can have as well as an idea of what spec the actual rig should be.

I think 4 display port compatible screens of the same model (dell ultrasharp?) would make sense. Would remove the need for an active adapter for eyefinity and still offer basically what the OP wants. I personally prefer the 5 screen portrait approach, providing the other 4 screens are the same model adding a fifth screen later wont be a problem or ruin the experience.

How about two FLEX cards? Is one going to be enough to power FSX with a five screen extended desktop.

Reading the Sapphire product page of the FLEX 6950, the top DVI is DVI-I, this can be converted to VGA. The other is DVI-D so digital only.

A mini Displayport to DVI will not work, the adapters have to be active. Even though you specced a DVI to VGA cable, I have a feeling that it may not work. A passive mini Displayport to VGA will garantee to work though. I'm afraid you will have to source this from elsewhere OP.

The 3 OcUK monitors will be in one monitor group, and the 2 BenQ will be in extended mode right? This should be able to work, and should be fine for OP. The 6950 will be more than enough consider FSX is more CPU based. If you're worried though, swap to a board that can use the inbuilt GPU on the 2500K, and use that to control the two smaller BenQ monitors, leaving the 6950 for the Eyefinity group.

I don't think these monitors can rotate though, so then you may have to source so VESA desk mounts. Personally I think this will be easier since it should make the entire setup cleaner and will allow the monitors to be placed right next to each other.

Apart from that, Reaper's build seems perfect. Once you get this built, we want to see pictures of it! 5 monitors would look amazing

FSX doesnt support crossfire/SLI, hence the going for a single card.

also, i'm pretty sure a single 6950 is powerful enough even at high settings, seeing the 5 screen video on the previous page and its specs
