why is it you need a car? I am in the same boat as you cheapest insurance evne for like a 1.1 fiesta is 1300 and I live in a very good area :(

Sure you really live in a low insurance area?

1.1 fiesta? £1300 at 17? Thats insanely expensive.

It might have been 3 years ago now, but i was looking at under £600 for the same thing. ended up paying £700 for a 1.6. I know insurance has gone up and obviosuly there's inflation. But that really seems like a lot.

Tried Endsleigh?, they are cheap if you're still in education.

£1300 would have been a bargain when I was 17, the cheapest quote I could find for a 1.1i Saxo was over £3000, but my postcode is a bit of a whore for insuring anything.

Sounds about right I'm afraid, I'd be amazed if you got quoted much lower than that, regardless of the car :(

Had a look at a 1997 P Reg, 1.6 Pug 306 XS with 100,000 on the clock for me, and even without a full licence the insurance was £980.27.

Winnar ;)

The bigger the car, the more you'll get for £500.

Insurance will be an issue, but, not too much depending on what you end up with.

I have a mate who's just paid £500 for a Ford Scorpio 2.0i (the bug eyes variant) and he's found it cheaper to insure than his previous Escort Si.

Plus £500 every 3 months in repairs :p
While Fox is being dramatic here, he does make a good point.

Many £500 cars will tend to suffer reasonably regular failures or need constant maintenence. Big things like Lagunas, Vectras, Mondeos etc should need less of this sort of thing than older Golfs/205's/Escorts/Sierras.

For example, my 1989 205 GTI had 189,000 miles on it when I collected it in Semptember. In the few months I've been using it regularly it has had the following "issues"

Air leaks
Exhaust blowing
Oil leak
Bottom end bearings worn
Top mounts worn
Calipers, discs, pads all in need of replacement
Oil breather system clogged
Driveshafts are on the way out now and I reckon the wishbones will be next.

So whilst you can run a cheap banger, you have to be prepared for things to go wrong with it. :)

Have you thought about the two wheel route?

You can easily get a 125 on the road for a decent wedge under a grand, probably would have been a better idea before you passed your car test mind :)

I had the same problem but i was 19 and the cheapest i could get was 1300 on my 1.1 fiesta. Basically when ever you start its never gonna be cheap but the yonger you are when you start the better it will get. I wouldnt of minded to much if the car was nice but it wasnt and normally the only people who will have a nice first car are those lucky rich people i would love to be :D. Just think in a few years your be able to get something much nicer and will laugh at your old car but at the same time repect it as even thou its was a pile of crap(in my case at least) it was your first car.

What would you expect from a 205 GTI? It's done 189K miles and you can guarantee that it's been thrashed for a good percentage of that.

A 1.4 Golf driver will not have been put under as much strain.

I bought a 120K scirocco that only cost me under £500 to run for 3.5 years as a daily driver. Insurance was a nightmare though, group 14 IIRC.

Fiat Cinquecento.

Cheap insurance and fun to drive (well the one I drove certainly was!)

Have to say, nice little cars.

My mate, just bought one for £600. Tax and MOT'd till september I think.

Pretty much the same as THIS

Nice little run around. Cant beat it on petrol really. Put a fiver init and went for miles and miles. Had a nice longish drive init.

His insurance, 3rd party was £1200 a year. Hes was 19 at the time of registering. Now hes just 20.

The thing that has put me off with driving young, is the insurance.

If I do start to drive this year (Whilst im 20) then Im going to get on my Dads insurance till im 21 next January. I might just hold out till then though, so the insurance would come down a little more again.

How much does insurance usually drop when you turn 21? Percentage wise? 15%?
