Hi all, I have been saving. I have got plenty for a 50cc bike now. I did buy a scooter but I would rather have a bike. I have around £1400 give or take a little. I have been looking at a few diffrent bikes. These include a derbi senda, Derbi GPR, Derbi GPR nude, Aprillia RS50, Aprillia MX50,

Now I can't test these bikes yet due to me not having a licence till 7th august. What would people choose as a first road bike? I have sold my Honda CR250 to fund this. But I will do motocross when I can drive so I can get myself to the tracks!

thanks all!

Thats not an option, I need the bike for college. It will be kept in good condition so I can keep as much value as possible.

Depends what you're after, really.

Sports replica for that budget? Aprilia RS50.

Edit: Checking your username, you were born on the 6th August 1991?! Why're you only getting your licence on the 7th August 2008, instead of a year and a day before?

I did see that it was set as that the other day and did change it :S But I am infact 15 till 6th of august booked my cbt for 7th and already got my helmet gloves and some decent jeans etc.

I see, heh.

I don't see why you need a geared bike to be honest. I've spent the last year on a ped, bought it new (well I didn't, it was for my 16th), and will only lose like £400 on it. You're not going to look good on a 50, whichever it is, so why spend the money on something unnecessary?

I already have bought a gilera runner SP50, But id much rather have a geared bike. Have been working since I have finnished school and sold my honda for one. So I am going to be having a geared bike.

Selling the ped, It cost me £200, But only has MOT till sept. Kinda rushed into buying it because it was cheap without thinking.

I see.

Well, I'm sure you've got a fair idea which bikes you like particularly. You're not going to get any serious speed off any of them, although you may get a teeny bit more with a race rep than with a crosser.

Waste of money buy something like a derby sender from around 200 for a few hundread. That way in a years time when you sale it you lose no money at all.

Aye, I have to echo what the others are saying.
Twist and go is the way to go.

All 50cc bikes are so slow there should be a law against them (sadly there is a law for them) so you might as well get something useful and easy to ride.

50cc and geared is not going to be any better than a 50cc scooter. An RS50 is also going to cost you more to run, require more servicing and certainly more insurance. It's also considerably more likely to be stolen and broken for parts. Why not MOT your scooter, hang onto it for a year and then get a 125 ?

I think if you've been doing motocross and are used to riding a bike then a scooter is a mistake because it'll drive you crazy going everywhere sitting down like you're waiting for a bus. Maybe the Gilera DNA 50 would be a decent bet? You still get a bike riding position, you get the benefits of twist and go and you get lots of storage space under the seat.

I've heard it all now. the DNA was an utter waste of time. You had to steer it with your rear end, the coolant tank cracked, the top of the neck on the coolant tank was never flat so you had to sand it back and use two O rings if you had any hope of not cooking the engine, the spedo senders died way too regularly, the clocks always let moisture in, that then condensed, they hated going up hills, the 180's whistled like a teapot (and no that wasn't when they were boiled dry due to the coolant tank issue), the inspection covers used to drop off and they were generally rubbish and that was based on the 125's and 180's, if you think for one second a 50 would make sense for anyone you're mad.

Fair do's. Never did the race-rep 50cc or 125cc thing. I started on a four stroke GS125. What would you recommend that would fit the bill but still have a bike riding position? 50cc trailie?

I bought a derbi GPR NUDE today, 2007, 1 owner, 4k miles full service history, Been de-restricted. £1450. Pics will follow when I have it home!

they are very slow until you put a 70cc kit on it, bigger carb, sports exhaust ect.. my mates RS50 (RS70 now) does a true 70 mph+ i followed him in the car and my speedo was showing 80
