550 Core Unlock Problem

Hey guys,
I have a Gigabyte UD3 mobo with the FB bios, this is what I need to unlock the 2 cores. I went through the steps of putting EC Firmware to "Hybrid" and AAC to "Auto" and then restarted. The computer wouldn't post so I reset the BIOS.

This brings me to my question, does this mean that I got a CPU with 2 dodgy cores? or does having a stock cooler, default vcore temp come into play?

Any help would be appreciated,
Liam

There was no 100% guarantee that 550 can unlock to Quad cores, so it depends on luck really. Just because it wouldn't unlock, doesn't make it "dodgy" as you call it.

On the other hand may be you are really just doing something wrong...guess we'll see what advices other members can give you.

Think you might need to up the voltage a bit, i have no idea which one or what to up it to though as i got lucky and unlocked without neededing to change any settings.

Its all in the luck of the draw mate, I've got a 550BE and 720BE and neither wiil unlock with any bios setting/voltage I set and I've tried them in two separate mobos, can't complain though, theres no guarantee either would unlock.

Cheers for the replies guys, In my BIOS I have this:

V.Core: 1.3500v
CPU NB VID Control: Normal

The CPU NB VID Control is not telling me what voltage is set as default for it, should I go up in increments of 0.025 for both of them together?

EDIT: There is one called "NB Voltage Control" though. Is the one I want CPU NB VID Control or NB Voltage Control.

Sorry to barge in but I tried the same with my Asus V-evo board and I could boot into Windows fully but things were a bit sketchy.

Does this mean all 4 cores are unlocked but just need a bit of tweaking?

Increase the v core in increments, but do not go higher than 1.5v. I think the cpu nb can also go up to 1.5 v (I have never dared take it above 1.35) but I would start by taking it up to 1.3 or so and then slowly increasing.

I am pretty sure you want the cpu nb control. You have to be careful to distinguish between cpu nb and the mobo nb. Not certain though. Anyone else? Look carefully at the mobo manual, might tell you.

If you can see 4 cores in cpu-z then yes you have successfully unlocked! Are you still on stock settings for everything else? Not overclocked?

In what way are things sketchy? Yes try some tweaking. Try this guide's advice. Slowly increase vcore and cpunb and keep testing with prime95 blend to check stability.

Also everyone should read this: Unleash the Dragon. It is very good for explaining what all the settings actually are / affect. Not sure if it covers unlocking but has good stuff on core voltage and nb voltage etc so relevant anyway.

Yep. CPU-NB. Default CPU NB voltage is usually about 1.1 to 1.2 for most Phenom IIs.

Well I will have another stab at unlocking it this weekend and hopefully put up a few screenies.

I am a total noob at this stuff so may need some assistance getting it stable! :)

You're doing better than me mine crashes after POST as a quad core (1.425v) and as either of the triple core combinations (at stock volts).

Last thing to try is triple cores with more volts, like you I'm hoping to have time to test it this weekend.

Best of luck with yours!

Mine unlocks to a quad core but i'm currently running it as a dual core as I don't need the extra power. It's at 1.2v as well so should be saving a bit of energy too. Anyway, how can I choose between tri core and quad core? Mobo is a gigabyte ma790x ud4p.

Dude you should keep quiet about that kind of thing or b3mor might just track you down and nick your cpu! :D

tri vs quad: what are you using it for? If you are worried about energy consumption maybe try it on tri for a while at the lowest vcore you can get it stable on and then just see if that meets your needs. If it is too slow go for the quad.

i unlocked my 550 be the other day and i ran occt and it found an error does this mean theres a faulty core?
i also ran prime95 and it showed one of the workers inactive

If the worker did not even start in prime95 that does sound like you have a problem. Try upping the vcore slowly, but not above 1.5 to see if that will get it active. Otherwise you may have to stick with triple. Good result anyway.
