56k Users?

i connect at a bit over 21Mbit (yes i live literally over the road from the exchange)
but looking at the stats for my company website (an estate agent) at least 10% of our hits a week are from dialup connections, there is another 10% of unknown but i dont know if any of those could be dial up
as for people i know who use 56k, they're normally (as in the case of my sister) people who only use it as and when they need it (to check mail, or look something up) therefore, using a pay as you go dial up account is considerably cheaper, she probably goes online about an hour a month if that, which i believe works out less than 60p a month

I know loads of people on 56k, all becuase they can't get Broadband. Percentage wise it may seem like there is hardly anyone left - but when you consider how many people have internet access it works out to being a lot of people on 56k. I can think of one person on 56k who I can't see ever getting it.... well not for years and years anyway. I know he is annoyed as he is paying more for 56k than he could get BB for but he doesn't have the option to change.

It is used in business still, but then that wouldn't matter for the 56k warning here unless you are piggy-backing on the 56k line to browse the net :p. I know quite a few people on 56k purely because they don't use the net enough to justify the monthly cost subscription. An hour's dialup maybe say a quid, compared with monthly even if it is only a tenner or fifteen quid these days.

My ISP throttles in the evenings, so I might as well use 56k.

But its the 1st of the Month

You need to rethink your broadband package :p

:D

Thye decided to change the internet usage thing

So i have to wait until the 4th until it gets freed up again
Just because they want to make people pay bills of different times of the month.

I still use 56k from time to time when I'm not at home and I think 56k warnings on threads are absolutely pointless.

I mean really, what good does it serve? A screenshot thread? May contain lots of image? Really, captain obvious?

When I'm on 56k, if I go into a thread containing lots and lots of pictures, my PC does not catch fire. My modem does not die. My back button remains completely functionable and I can leave the thread as quickly as I entered it.

56k warnings have NEVER served any purpose, let alone server a purpose any longer.

Nope, not 56k here. :)

I don't know anyone personally who uses 56k, but I have a few customers who do (at a guess under 10%). I explain broadband to them and most the time they dont know the benefits of it, and quite a few then sign up.

I've had cable since 2000 which has been great. 512k -> 1mb -> 2mb -> 10mb -> will become 20mb this month.

Indeed. It's not like said threads were created back in the days when broadband was a luxury either. Where only the rich & famous could enter such threads.

56K warnings should be done away with. I don't think that anyone unfortunate enough to still have 56K needs reminding that things are going to take forever to load. :p

56k?? Haven't used that for at least five years :)

It was a nightmare - I remember downloading an early version of Gamespy. 20Mb file over 56k  After four hours when the d/l was almost finished, the bloomin ISP timeout kicked in and cut me off, killing the d/l. Was not happy

My father in law still uses 56k, but he only sends a couple of emails a week so even as cheap as broadband is, it's still not justifiable for him!
