5700XT: Fine Wine strikes again

So this thread triggered some people.

I have had problems with my 5700XT early in my ownership of it, i knew that would be the case, because i knew it usually takes AMD a while to perfect the drivers.

You buy into AMD's GPU's knowing you might have some annoying driver problems but they mature into something stable and reliable later on, that's the tradeoff for paying a lot less than you pay for Nvidia where you might pay as much as £200 more for the same performance but the vendor recording software works as it should, the GPU doesn't blackscreen when the PC puts the screen into a power saving mode.

Having said that Turning launch has not been without its problems and while AMD are known for imperfect early drivers Nvidia often get it wrong with the actual hardware resulting it total failures.

AMD need to get better with early drivers, i think they will as thier fortunes are improving.

As for the 5700XT, it turning out to be a very good GPU, its as fast as an RTX 2080 now that the drivers have matured and those drivers are now rock solid, my card has not put a foot wrong in the last several driver releases. its faultless.

@humbug those that bought 2070 would not have bought AMD I would wager.

This was an excellent video and reinstates what we were saying in the AMD threads. HWU didnt experience the issues, of the 2 that surfaced when they gave the cards away, both were remedied when changing port. Where this is now relevant is they should carry this on to the RDNA2 movement and should a) know how to deal with the driver b) squeeze more performance out of the gate.

Like they pointed out countless times: its way better than the 2060S which is priced the same. It outperforms or on par with the 2070S which is £100+ dearer.

Dont talk garbage with RT on these cards as they are too weak, so 'offering a better feature set' is a bit rich imo.

Day 1 has in game releases or driver optimisation?

If it's driver then I have news for you this happens on every single new GPU architecture from both amd and nvidia. It takes time for devs to get the best out of the new GPUs and also amd and nvidia gain more performance over time also.

Game ready drivers well amd has been on the ball for years now even most of the time releasing before nvidia.

Look at the 3080 in reviewers hands.. they already whinging that another driver is released and will have to redo their tests. Even nvidia dont have drivers ready, take off the rose tinted glasses. (adding to shanks counter)

Right.

I wonder how many people played Metro Exodus at 1440P with all the RT on with "console frame rates" on their £700+ RTX 2080.

I don't consider a feature set that isn't reasonably usable for £250 more than a competing GPU as anything more than a curiosity.

DLSS 2.0 will be a game changer though, and I’d wager that a 2070s will play Cyberpunk at 1440p with most RT effects on with the upscaling tech making FPS acceptable. That’s gonna be one massive game!

Good of them to sort out the drivers for the existing cards just a few weeks befoe their new cards are launched

People that say this better feature set likely dont even use them. They mention it as it makes it look like its another reason they needed the card. Its always from people that also dont own a radeon card, like we dont get a 'rich feature set' either (chill, RIS, Link, Anti-lag, enhanced sync etc. etc.).

The only thing I would like that has been available recently is the noise cancellation, that is a good tool.

I expect there'll be a Navi 22 SKU aimed at this level of performance for budget buyers soon enough. 5700XT performance in a sub £250 package would sell like hotcakes.

DLSS2 is good, yes, no bones about it and yes i agree that is a selling point, more than RT on Turing which to me is nothing more than a curiosity.

AMD has a global sharpening feature, no its not tensor core AI rebuilding parts of the image ecte..... but the end result is close enough to Nvidia's DLSS2, so close you're hard pushed to tell the difference and it works turn on and forget in ANY game flawless. that's also worth something.

DLSS2 is good but not worth investing a £500+ card on for one game that has it. I dont know how many games that are released every year, but the proportion of them that will harmonise with these technologies (DLSS + Raytracing) to make the game experience awesome is going to be counted on one hand.

True, the sharpening is fantastic and does definitely help with the upscaling. Barely tell unless you stop to look around very closely.

Its not championed as you wont recognise this if you dont play on a Radeon card. Its nothing special but key thing is its not game specific and works in nearly everything. This approach is good but as its not an nvidia 'rich feature set' its snubbed.

An 'Almost as good' DLSS2, Anti Lag < called something different in AMD's drivers but its the same thing Nvidia are making a lot of noise about in Ampere, Free Sync, Radeon Chill <more than just limiting FPS it will find and stabilize optimal FPS on the fly to balance power consumption, Record, Instant Replay, Instant .giff, Radeon Boost < this is where the GPU will tile down render parts of the image in motion to improve performance.

AMD Software UI is also vastly better than Nvidia with extensive overclocking features in the drivers, usage and performance statistics recording for individual games and the overall GPU, instant access to line charts on the fly... its a sleek modern UI full of useful stuff, i like it a lot, Nvidia have a lot of catching up to do in this.

So basically you guys paid for a card that took a year plus to get to the performance it's capable of, and you're now tooting your horns. Never mind the fact that their successor cards are just around the corner now.

The state of some people.

Obviously didn't watch the video and is on another context attack. lol.

Maybe because RDNA2 is an evolution of RDNA1,and they are backporting driver improvements from RDNA2 back to RDNA1??

I read somewhere that RDNA1 still had remnants of the older GCN architecture and made writing drivers initially a bit of a 'mare. RDNA2 is completely fresh so should in theory not be so hard to get a hold of!

Could be BS who knows, but they have no excuses now they've had enough warnings!

Stating the obvious but AMD really need to sort their drivers out once and for all.

I had to disregard an AMD card in a build I specced for my brother recently, because the system was pre-built (he lives too far away from me now) and even though he's used PC's for years, he's still totally and self admittedly an utter newb when it comes to maintaining and understanding (he doesn't want to) PC's.

No because it would have been more expensive if it had this performance from the start.

The 5700XT price was based on the performance at launch. If the permance increases, it turns into a bargain for the money.
