Just looking at getting a card. I've had nothing but problems with directx11, and as such I'm not sure if its an nvidia problem or what. I've no particular brand loyalty, and I'm looking about this price range so what are my options?

Also: given that something like the MSI Frozr is overclocked by default, could it be those voltages that are causing system instability?

whats your current grapgics card? might be worth holding off till the new cards are released, saying that I couldn't resis and went 2x 6905 toxic :)

Surely at this stage it would be best to wait the extra few weeks until the new AMD 7xxx series launches?

Otherwise I'd go for the GTX 570 if you must get a card right now.

That's rather odd.

What's your entire system spec, also what do you mean by stable?
What happens really?

Its an overclocked i5 [email protected], 12gb ddr3 ram, 850W corsairHX, and currently the msigtx580 frozrII. It used to have a 470gtx in it and was stable as anything. Since putting in the 580 recently, Ive had kernel power issues, bluescreens, directx11 basically doesn't work. Only thing I can pinpoint is the overclocked gfx card because putting a gtx470 back in works fine. There have been loads of problems recently all over forums (looking at Deus Ex HR especially) with nvidia directx11 drivers (although again the 470 works fine with dx11), so part of me wonders if moving to ATI isn't a bad idea anyway.

Sounds like the GPU alright, specially since it works with the 470.

Have you been able to try the 580 in another system just to confirm?

If so, I'd either say stick with the 470 until the AMD 7xxx series is out, or opt for the Toxic 6950, which runs the same as a 6970.

I can't test another system sadly, well I suppose I could next week but it'd be a real pain; I'm quite keen to replace now because with the 580 my system just isn't useable. Only problem is with the 7 series coming out what I pay now is bound to come down isn't it?

There's nothing solid on the 7XXX series.
If it does end up coming out Q4 of this year, it'll be a mid range product first, or even low end, I'm guessing, based on history.

Fair enough; and I guess the current 6950's will last me a long time, I can always upgrade to crossfire later, assuming a 850HX will power that.

I haven't. Admittedly, I don't have any experience of crossfire. I've read a lot about it, and would just be concerned about instability problems, given thats what I'm having now :p.

Nah, xfire is quite stable. Specially with cards that have been out a while such at the 68xx and 69xx cards.

I loved my old 4870x2, the only problem I had with it, was that it died when my PSU blew as well.

So you can easily get a 6950 and later xfire if you want some more power.

Also actually I'd need to upgrade my motherboard to go crossfire as the second pci-e only has 4 lanes. So I guess I'm after a good single card which the Toxic looks like.

I've been running 6870 Crossfire since the 6XXX series launch and it's been quite fine.

If you're adamant on single GPU, 6950 Toxic is the best value at the moment as it has a switch to unlock to a 6970 (Though isn't 100% guaranteed)

Contrary to popular belief, PCI-E 4x won't affect it much at all, tech power up did a review.

Oh right. In that case I think I'll risk the toxic :). Thanks all.
