5800X for £335 or wait for 5900X

5800X would give you a decent amount more of per-core performance, so if you want that go for a 5800X now.

But if you don't really need that, I'd say either:
- Wait for a 5900X, if you're going to keep your current mobo and memory etc for a while
- Wait for Zen 4 and go AM5 at the end of the year

not planning on overhauling my motherbaord. i got the X570 board for longevity

always planning on getting a Zen 3 in this but just getting itchy fingers seeing 5800x is now quite a good discount. i think i will wait for 5900x availability to become decent and see what is what. not in a massive need for higher CPU power

If you were doing mainly single/low threaded tasks or even just only gaming then definitely you should go for it as it is quite a good jump in performance and that price makes it very good value.

Though if you are doing a fair amount of stuff that can use all the 3900X threads then stick with what you have and wait.

You will lose multicore performance but gain single thread, will that single thread make a difference for your use case IE high end GPU at 1080p or a programme that relies on ST then go for it if not then wait for a 5900X since with that CPU you will gain an upgrade in all scenarios.

That is very cheap, I think that would be a near no-cost upgrade and a reasonable bump in gaming performance but only really worth it if that single core performance is more important to you.

Anyway that chip is sold now. Anyway I saw some 5900x priced at £550 or near enough which looks interesting. But I suspect as time go by it maybe closer to £500 soon.

Depends on your use case really and how much multicore power you need.

I'd like to buy a 5800X too, how are you getting one £335? Is it used, or 'mates rates'?

Or from US?

I was pretty much set on the 5800X but it seems they run +20C hotter than any of other 5000 chips. Up to 90C under load. That's a bit much imho.

The 5900X doesn't apparently have such an issue, and oddly enough neither does the 5950X.

Not sure if the problem is fully solved by under-volting the heck out of them, but it might be.

You can limit the TDP to 65w, and it should perform like a 5800 (non X), e.g. almost the same.

It would be simpler if AMD would just sell a 5800 (65w) as a standalone CPU, but that would mean a more reasonable price...

I wonder if the different CCX arrangement on the 5900X and 5950XT helps to reduce temps?
