5820K to 6700K... any benefit?

What clock-speed is the 5820k running at would be the question. Like for like in terms of clockspeed with skylake they are pretty much identical in games and the 5820k will stretch its legs beyond skylake in video/photoshop.

Consider getting an AIO cooler for for the 5820k and run it at 4.5GHZ minimum would be my suggestion.

If video/photoshop less important and gaming in CPU bound games more important then Skylake is pretty awesome as 4.7GHZ is very common on the 6700k. I was lucky and got mine running at 4.8GHZ with low temps.

Maybe also consider an NVMe SSD disk for the 5820k, I was surprised at the kick-up in perf by using one.

He has it running at 4.2 on an AIO, but it's not always super stable. I think it's a bit of a duffer as CPU's go, as mine runs a solid 4.3-4.4 with no issues. I've never got a stable 4.5 on mine either though. Just luck of the draw really.

He has his boot drive on SSD. We both have similar set-ups actually, although I've just got an M.2 which I'll be using as boot drive so I'm interested to see what difference that makes.

not yet it isn't, the 6700k is still faster in dx12, granted true dx12 games going forward the 5820k should be faster but at the moment it simply isn't.

i personally wouldn't swap, but stating you shouldn't because its a downgrade simply isn't true.

Yeah I'd seen that. I always thought of the 6700K as more of a side-grade than anything else, when you weigh up the specific needs and uses in this particular scenario. For a more professional set-up then it definitely swings in favour of the 5820K though.

The 5820K is a gem.

Upon its release X99 was overpriced purely because of DDR4. Those prices have now dropped.

An X99 system right now with a 5820K is probably cheaper than a Skylake system with 6700k. Two additional cores plus the ability to OC them all to over 4Ghz is ridiculous.

If anyone is genuinely thinking of making that downgrade then more fool them. The only thing Skylake has over X99 is energy efficiency, and even then the energy cost between the two is sweet f all.

spot on

Just get him a NZXT Hue+ lighting kit - that will make his rig look prettier than any mobo change.
I prefer the aesthetics of an X99 board myself - I like the Ram either side of the CPU; it's a neater look.
He'll get a much bigger boost in games by putting the money into something like a gtx1080 instead.(depending on what he's using)

At best it's a side-grade - for multiple core tasks it's a downgrade.
Get him a prettier case and some lights.

Get him to go in the loft and find his Christmas lights then he can have the prettiest system ever :D

5820 to a 6700k would be a pointless side grade and a downgrade for multitaksing.

As for multi-core gaming I believe we were promised this many many years ago. Some deliver others don't.

I've bought my 5820K from a guy that "upgraded" to a 6700k.
Maybe was your friend? haha because the reason he replaced was because of the MB looks.
My 5820K looks to be a good chip, 4.5Ghz at 1.25V... I bought it as a stop gap willing to get a 6900K, but now that the new cpus are out and I'm not impressed I think I will keep the 5820K for now, maybe in the future I'll get an used 5960X when it lowers the price.
The 5930K it is pointless in my opnion, I'm using the 5820K with 3gpus runing at pcie 3 8x and still have 4 pcie lanes left if I want to install a M.2.
