5850 Boot issue

Good evening, knowledgeable ladies & gentlemen (and miscellaneous other) of the forum.

My shiny new Saphhire HD5850 turned up today, which is great, but I can't quite seem to get it to work, which is not so great.

Before I RMA it I thought I'd ask you graphics worldly people if you can see if there is anything I've missed before I embarrass myself with returning a working card.

Brief PC specs:
PSU: Corsair TX650W
MB: Asus P5N-E SLI (Bios v1301)
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo ([email protected])
Mem: 4GB

Problem description:
No POST. No beeps. Power is running through everything (lights on cards & MB light up as expected), all fans kick into life. But no sound and no output.

I still have my old 8800GTS which despite starting to fail (weird artefacts and lines) will allow my system to boot up when it is switched back in.

I have unplugged all extraneous powered devices within the case (such as hard drives, cd drives, extra case fans) just to eliminate them. I have also ensured that both 6pin power plugs are connected to the HD5850 card. The card is in the primary (x16) slot.

Am I missing something obvious here? Is there a known issue with this motherboard and recent graphics cards? etc

Thanks for your time in reading this, hope you can help.

Edit note:
OC have finished testing my card and it seems fine.
This seems to confirm that the Asus p5n-e board has some serious issues with the 5850.

Have you made sure that you have it on x16 slot only, or tried it on dual vga mode with the switcher card?

Wow, that was a quick response.

I can confirm that I have it in the main/primary slot. (Although they are both PCIEX16) according to my MB manual.

I have to admit that I'm not entirely sure what you are referring to with 'the switcher card'.

PCI-e power connected securely? IS there another PCI-e power connector you could try or a dongle from one of the other power conenctors?

Andy

I've tested to ensure that both connectors are secure. However, I haven't tried splitting off another 6pin from a different power cable and switching them out in turn to rule out a duff cable.

If it will not even post, try reseating You GFX card and make sure its not jammed against anything on the motherboard, even try the other slot

Still no Joy, try Card in another PC

I have tried reseating the card (it's been in and out of the PC a few times now). I'm also definitely using the correct power cables. :)

I have also tried the different slot :(

Unfortunately, I don't have another PC I can try the 5850 in (I'm using a laptop for the forum access).

Sorry, out of ideas, old card and update the motherboard bios and check settings/defaults etc

Same issue here with one I received from another company (rhymes with babs).

Tried everything, reset CMOS, BIOS up to date, 2 different PC's just one PCI-E slot on both (Asus P5Q/Asrock AliveDuel NF5). Tried molex adapters and native PSU PCI-E power. Ample wattage on both PC's PSU. Both work fine with the Sapphire 4870 that the 5850 (also Sapphire) was replacing.

RMA'd the bugger and have ordered the Asus from here instead.

Very rare, obviously not impossible these things are tested,

You will have to Google but I think they may have led's on the card, someone around here may know, Must say I did not check mine

4 series had fault led's worth a look

No LED's on these, also I'm wondering if the good people at Sapphire may have been a bit less rigorous in their testing to meet the launch deadline, i.e. plug into power supply, turn on, fan spins, "it's a good'un" !!

I had the same issue. I just pulled the card out and re-installed with the screws not connected. Then it booted up fine. I then re-applied the screws (a bit less rigidly) and it's been working since (touch wood). Hopefully it doesn't give me any other problems.

Morning. Thanks for all the replies guys.

Still no joy :(

I have tried taking some memory out and I have reseated the pesky card numerous times now (with and without screw holding). Also, power seems fine.

I think I'm left with trying it in someone elses PC. (I'll have to try and persuade a family member to give me access, I hope they still don't have the same motherboard as me :))

Has anyone got a HD5850 working with this motherboard? (ASUS P5Ne-SLI) - Assuming that anyone on this board has even got that particular combination.

Well I've spent another 40 minutes methodically going through each of the tests again just in case I missed something.

The only thing of note is that if I leave the POST long enough (sometimes 30s) it will progress to 1 long beep followed by 3 short beeps, which for my motherboard is: "No video card or bad video RAM" -> Reseat or replace the video card.

So either my motherboard really doesn't like this card or it's a bad card. I'll be testing it in another PC tomorrow, which also has a Asus p5n-e, so it's possible I won't be able to rule out either before RMA'ing it.

How sympathetic are Overclockers to cases like this?

Just a quick bit of thread necromancy to give you an update on this one.
OC have finished testing my card and it seems fine.

I would very much doubt any current Asus motherboard would not have been tested with ATI's latest GFX cards !

Had this problem For so long am still trying to find the cause.... pc turns on all powers up but no life! - i figured it was my old GTS but had my 5770 about a week and here we are again... didnt do it first few days it was in.
am now thinking its the motherboard, or the Asus/ OcZ setup i have as they dnt run well together apparently...

such a pain... now am getting driver not responding aswell as green dots flashing... growing tired :(
