5850 on the way...

Rather than make a new thread, has anyone had any issues with the HDMI port on a 5850. Got mine in today and the screen is 'tearing' every so often, not sure of the best way to describe it but it's obviously not right.

Tried a few cables and thought it might be down to a poor connection as the top of the port is slightly too high but the cable seems to be plugged in all the way.

What drivers are you using? There is a known issue with 2nd screen flickering, a quick flick through forums will show you what I mean.

With regard to GFX Card make, I always seem to go for either MSI or XFX. Im really glad I went for the MSI 5850 765/1125 this time around, unlockable voltage through Afterburner out of the box and as I said earlier a very decent overclock for £225 inc next day del :D

This may be a bit of a hijack, but its along the same lines i guess :)

I'm thinking of getting one of these cards for my early 2008 Mac Pro, running it under windows 7 as its not supported under Mac OS I believe. It will be replacing an 8800GT which has undergone the 'oven' repair twice now.

Just wondering if the Mac pro will have enough juice to power it, and if i'll see a massive improvement?

2.8 GHz Quad Core 45-nm Intel Xeon E5462
6GB of 800 MHz DDR2 EEC
1920x1080
1000w PSU, not to sure on this though.

OS X might not be able to handle it the best card I seen (a while back) was only a HD4870 single. yeah should do if not you will have to get a new PSu assuming Mac PCs use the same connectors

There are some nice cards available for Mac OS, but they are crazily overpriced (apple lol), I haven't even booted to Mac OS since installing Windows 7 anyhow!

I've had a google and it seems the PSU for the mac pro is un-upgradeable, hopefully the 5850 uses the same power connectors to the motherboard as the 8800?

Quick update - the card has been found to be faulty, so I'm getting my money back.

Bit of a pina, but at least I'm note out of pocket.

Might look at some other 5850 options... :-)

Cheers

Rich

I wonder what the return rate is on these 5000 cards? I guess we see quite a few threads of people having problems with their purchases because there so popular OCUK sell a lot of them.

Just thought I'd pop this here as a few peeps are wondering if their PSU's are up to the job! :)

The main reason you see more ATI problems is that there are far more ATI card users on these forums than Nvidia users, due to ATI's successes with the 5 series. I suppose experience with each card is subjective (all my ATI cards have been rock solid, both my 8800gts and GTX280 have had problems), but ATI's failure rate is, generally speaking, no more or less than it's Nvidia counterparts. Sometimes you're just unlucky

i have a 5850 saphire not working only a few days old :(, i tried an RMA request with OCUK but it bummed out so i decided to keep the card until this weekend, ive just bought a sparkly new 890gx + 1055T + 4GB system to go with it, my psu is an expensive zalman 850wHP.

mine wont post on the current system, fans spin full other fans spin but nothing just a blank screen, tried almost everything physcial i can within the case.

so i read up on this issue and my card is either DOA or my 2006 G33 motherboard is too old and low spec to handle it? seems my msi mobo only has PCI-E 1.0 and although the 5xxx series is meant to be backwards compatible it turns out for many people it just isnt i.e people test same card in other mates newer systems and they work fine ! so if you run pcie- 1.1A you MIGHT be ok

so i would expect a lot of people even with 5670`s just trying to upgrade an old pc to play some new games a decent gfx end up buying a whole new system or returning and buying an nvidia instead.

it seems to be a 5xxx series design issue.

If you've owned it less than 7 days (7 working days IIRC), you can return it for a full refund, no RMA needed, under the Distance Selling Regulations law.
