So I'm about to order and having just read about the new GTX 460 1gb I'm not sure what to do. Which is best? Reviews generally suggest the 5850 is better, but some swing the other way, so not really sure which to believe. Also the 460 is cheaper, but not massively.

Hmm! Which to go for?!

Gaming at 1920x1080 with an i7 if it matters.

I'm in the same boat, leaning towards the 460 myself, but the rumour of ATI price slashing is making me think. I would hold off if you can. I'm limping along with a borked 1950pro after my 8800 gt gave up the ghost the other day. I'm dealing with being restricted to windows/apps and the occasional screenwide artifact, so if I can wait, anyone can.

I've had nvidia a lot recently, still using my 8800GTS 512MB. But I've used ATI in the past and never really had any issues or anything, so it's not the company that's bothering me really.

Just really not sure what to do now, it's doing my head in haha

It's very close between the two. Been looking at the reviews of the gtx 460, seems on average to perform in-between the 5830 and 5850. Maybe see if 5850 prices come down a little a bit.

If I was in that situation, I would just buy a new graphics card. I would like to buy a new graphics card but I don't need to. I intend on keeping the new card for 12months++ as I have done with this one so the longer I leave it, the better it will be. The 460 is quite tempting.

If money wasn't a problem then personally I'd get the 5850, if you are like me though and prefer getting the best value for money then I'd go for the 460 1gb.

im looking at the 460 1gig myself just simply because of the extra features like phsyx (for mafia 2).

But how can a little dinky card like that have enough grunt to run physx as well?

I think people forget that it places extra tax on the gpu.

Dont get me wrong, Iv seen the benchmarks, and its very impressive for price, bu to expect it to run physx as well, is to ask too much.

For every big card of a generation, there is a tiny card of the next generation that is equal to it. I remember taking out my huge 4600ti to replace it with a tiny 6600gt and it just flew in comparison. Cards don't really get bigger/more power hungry, it just appears that way if you look at one generation.

At STOCK settings - the 5850 wins but not by a lot. If not into overclocking or buying an already clocked card should go for the 5850.

If you fancy clocking then again should go with the 5850 - upon the assumption that when that is clocked it will be faster than a clocked 460. (Always assuming that both cards will clock !!)

The Pallit 460 running at 800 does look to provide a good balance of price/(guaranteed with clock speed)performance and if it were in stock would be very tempted .But given OcUk's current stock levels would probably go for a 5850 except .....although the prices were looking high they are now looking 'very' high which I do find off-putting .:( (a comment on 5850 prices generally NOT the prices at OcUk)

Overall as there's so little between them go for a 460 and keep the money that you save for the next upgrade :D:D

Currently thinking it's not really a massive difference in price in the grand scheme of things, so might as well get a 5850 and clock the nuts off it :p

Could I use my old 8800GTS alongside a 5850 for Physx in Windows 7?

Good grief. The GTX460 is not as fast as an HD5850, please stop believing the people who have bought them and places like Guru3D.

The GTX460 sits about halfway between the HD5830 and the HD5850. It would need to consistently match the HD5850 to be the same speed, not beat it in the few benchmarks that nVidia optimise for.

So it really comes down to how much you have to spend. The HD5830 is pointless now, discard it. It's up to you how much power you want. Both are excellent choices.
