5850 Twin Frozr II, what am I missing?

I received my 5850 and a 700w OCZ StealthXStream PSU and booted fine after fitting them into the case. Everything looks fine except for one thing.

My 5850 can't overclock beyond the stock core speed (which is 775mhz), there's no option to do it, it just stops at 775mhz in both CCC and Afterburner, I can't go any higher, just lower (enabled unofficial overclocking but that changed nothing) I've seen reports of people getting it to 900/1200, what am I missing?

I'm confused.

Oh, if it helps, I didn't have any issues overclocking my previous card, HD 5670, to over 800mhz

you need to change the cfg to this to overclock over 775

UnofficialOverclockingEULA = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it

save and restart afterburner, hope this helps

Tried that, nothing changed.

So, I followed the instructions and flashed the bios.

I think I've bricked it :/ The PC boots but there's no display output or anything.

So, I have my spare 5670 to use and I can't restore my 5850 until I use my brother's PC which has integrated gfx and put in the 5850 there to flash it (if that works)

edit: Yep, 99% sure it's bricked, with 5670 in, it boots.

Yes, I did.

Is it possible to do a blind flash if the card's bricked and try to fix it using the bios I backed up?

edit: actually, don't think blind flashing will work anyway, PC boots but mouse/keyboard don't turn on with 5850 in it.

Rather high doesn't even cover it....that's like 100% higher clock speed than a 5850 at 775/1125 (stock 5850 is 725/1000).

God knows how they got it that high ??

Off topic but does your's buzz o/p.. ?

I havent flashed a card in years I have heard about blind flashing but not sure how it works.. I think you boot into a dos window using a boot disc ? Does the motherboard beep or anything with the 5850 in...?

I can't quite work it out, it's hard to hear with my hearing aids but it sounded like a long beep and couple of beeps but at the same time, it's like continuous beep, which indicates that there's a problem with the PSU, board or keyboard but I can boot fine using my 5670.

Sorry for double posting but I managed to find a PC with integrated gfx card and plugged my 5850 in there and started it up

- with the card plugged in and 2x 6pin PCI-E connected, it won't boot at all, even when the integrated video is connected + set as default

- with 1x 6pin PCI-E (and without too) it boots and tried to use atiflash method but it says no adapter found.

Is it completely dead? I can't really RMA it because it's entirely my fault.

Will that even work?

I get no adapter found error when I tried to use atiflash method to restore the bios I backed up.

Gonna try that later.

It might as it detects the bios version then updates to the latest version it downloads online.

If you have a backup of the original bios you should be able to flash it from a dos prompt its just finding a program to do it..

Yeah, came across that last night, can't do much with it for now though.

I was thinking about getting a cheap PCI (not PCI-E) graphic card and attempt to restore my 5850 that way.

Might be worth giving MSi a call. They might be able to sort out a flash or swap the card on a good will gesture..
I called them regarding my faulty 5850 and they were really helpfull.

1500 core clock/2250 memory clock!? That can't be serious...

And I think the design of the MSI 5850 Twin FrozR PCB is different from a standard MSI 5850, so I doubt that is the correct bios to use...

What's so surprising about it, it's just an unlocked BIOS for reference cards, these GPUs are capable of 1.2GHz on extreme cooling and hard volt mod and there's nothing wrong with lifting the limits. Memory modules are another matter, I guess it would be hard pushing them above 1.4GHz.

Tried that, nothing changed.

Good job for bricking your card (temporarily or permanently).

Also thanks to Moogleys for doing his research before giving his bright advice to a novice.

OP, it's highly unlikely that your card is dead - have you tried the other DVI port? That BIOS changes some of the outputs as it's designed for reference 5850's.

If you bricked the card, you won't be able to do ****. It's possible to flash if you have a secondary graphics output though.
