5870 no display!!! help!!

Have you tried via a different display connector? like HDMI or a different DVI-D socket in the card?also try with your cpu at stock to see it boots up to windows then manually overclock again if it does or revert back to your saved bios settings.

i've set all my bios settings back to stock and tried to run the card again but it just runs the fan at full speed without any signal on my monitor. My computer posts and boots up windows normally though cos i can hear the windows log in sound.

I did a little research and found loads of people with the same problem but no fix. Some have changed psu's and mobos to get it to work.

Someone mentioned about letting it post and run for 5-10 mins then hittin the reset button and magically it worked? Going to try that now and see what happens.

I don't have a HDMI cable so thats a no go, i tried using the DVI converter that came with the card but still no luck.

i bought a 5870 back when they were first released and had exactly the same problem as you, weird thing is that wehen it was tested by ocuk they said it worked fine

i tried updating my bios and reseating the card multiple times but it still wouldnt work

i noticed that you have the exact same psu that i had back then so maybe that is the problem?

It might just be, did you ever fix it or did you just RMA it and got a refund/replacement?

I updated my bios last nite and still no luck, fan just spins up to max and no display or post now.

i just got a refund instead
since then tho i have changed my psu to a Corsair HX 850w

i didnt bother to get another 5870 but im running a 5850 on the new psu just fine, i was also getting capacitor squeal from my old gtx295 with the other psu but it went when i got the new one

Don't suppose anyone knows a good way of testing for PSU stability and whether it is the problem? I have a Cheap chinese 750W psu here that i could use... I was thinking of using the psu tester technique with the paperclip on the 24pin and then just pluggin then 2 x 6 pins into the 5870 and have my corsair psu run my rig.

So basically corsair runs my rig and the cheapo psu runs my card?

What do you think? Worth a shot?

Btw do i need to update my chipset drivers when updating bios or will that not cause my graphics card to not be picked up? I didn't update my vga drivers either.

i dont think chipset drivers would affect it ;)

give the other psu a try for the graphics card and let us know how you get on
if you do decide to rma it because of the fault then give ocuk a ring and explain that even if the card works for them you would like a refund :) i did this when i sent mine back as i had a strong feeling that the card was going to be ok when they tested it

to be honest i think its more likely the psu causing the problem mate, im not 100% sure on it so it could be worth asking in the motherboard section to see if anyone is running a 5870 on your motherboard

Hi Jay85, hx650 is more than enough to run a 5870, you have 4 pci-e 6+2 conectors for 2xGPU's, do not use a pci-e molex connector.

*** Have you disabled on broad graphics in your bios. ****

Jay 85 > try this > install 5870 with 2xPCI-E connectors from psu, clear c-moss and reboot > load optimized default settings making sure onbroad graphics is disabled.

Boot into windows, check divice manager to see if it has installed.

Sooo im finally home now.

Took the card back to OCUK headquarters today but couldn't get a refund because:

a) the product has been used and is opened.
b) occording to them the card is not faulty and posted on their systems.
c) Even if the product is not faulty i still cannot get a refund because the distance selling regulation (2000) doesn't apply to me because i bought the card from the shop over the counter therefore not long distance.

I'm pretty screwed tbh! I asked my local IT guy on the way back to do a check on the gfx card to see if it works on his rigs just to be sure. Will take my whole rig in tomorrow for him to look at to see what the problem is.

I suspect it maybe psu or motherboard but im hoping its the psu more than anything...

Or even better its just driver issues...

Either way i feel pretty crappy after spending £300's on a card that doesn't work and with pretty much no where to turn to so this is kind of a last resort.

If there is any other help or advice anyone can give me i would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you
Jay

Its not a driver issue.

My very first 5870 worked for about a month then would rearly boot giving me fans at 100% with no display. Sometimes after taking it out and back in would get it to boot.

Took mine back got a new card and updated my motherboard bios and not had any problems with my new one.

Good job I didnt get mine from OcUK as they would have tested it and deemed it as "fine"

This sucks, its like my word for their word right now.

If the other guy at the other shop tests it and finds its not posting aswel then what the hell do i do? Do i try and get a written consent from him stating it is not posting and push for a refund? I am not having this, i will not be conned out on £300 of my hard earned cash if indeed the card is at fault here. Should find out tomorrow whether it is or not.

DID YOU TRY THIS -

install 5870 with 2xPCI-E connectors from psu, clear c-moss and reboot > load optimized default settings making sure onbroad graphics is disabled.

Boot into windows, check divice manager to see if it has installed.

Yes you can clear the c-moss by taking the battery out, but there should be two pins which you short out with a jumper on mobo, see manual.

MAKE SURE YOUR > 4-pin ATX12V connector > IS PLUGGED IN.

I can't test it out because i dont have the card with me right now. It's been tested at my friends shop.

I'll try it tomorrow when i get it back.
